It is now just over one week until Roberto Di Matteo will lead a team of Chelsea Legends to Anfield to take on Liverpool FC Legends, and today we can announce four more names who will take part in the match.
Eidur Gudjohnsen Jesper Gronkjaer, John Mikel Obi and Loic Remy will be donning blue shirts once more when the game takes place on Saturday 22 March, raising funds for the Chelsea Foundation and in particular, the Chelsea Players' Trust which supports the welfare of those who made the club what it is today.
Gudjohnsen, a double Premier League winner for Chelsea two decades ago, scored against Liverpool when the striker from Iceland made his first start for the club back in 2000, as he also did in a 4-0 victory over the Reds a year later.
The confirmation Jesper Gronkjaer is to play is well timed, given today’s UEFA Conference League match between two of his former clubs. The pacy Danish winger had a big part to play in one of the most famous Chelsea versus Liverpool games – on the final day of the 2002/03 season. The Blues needed a draw to secure Champions League qualification at the Reds’ expense and having gone 1-0 down, it was Gronkjaer who crossed for Marcel Desailly to head the crucial equaliser. He then scored himself to make the result safe.
Mikel is one of the players Di Matteo selected for the 2012 Champions League final and the Nigerian went on to have what many believe was his finest game. He was also triumphant in three FA Cup finals and won the Premier League twice as he brought a controlling influence to our midfield. France international striker Remy was part of our 2014/15 championship-winning side and he contributed nine goals to that season overall. Included was one on his debut and one in a 3-0 win over Tottenham, plus a strike against our closest challengers that year – Manchester City.
Today’s announced four will be joined by a host of former Chelsea stars, including Gianfranco Zola, Carlo Cudicini, Ramires, Gary Cahill and many more for the 3pm kick-off a week on Saturday.
Tickets will go off sale at 10am on Wednesday 19 March.
