Levi Colwill believes he is producing his best football under Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino and is targeting a place at Euro 2024 after earning his maiden call-up to the senior England squad.
After loan spells at Huddersfield Town and Brighton and Hove Albion, Colwill was integrated into the Chelsea first-team squad this summer by Pochettino. The centre-back has quickly impressed.
The 20-year-old, who signed a new long-term contract in August, has started each of our opening four Premier League fixtures and the Carabao Cup second round victory over AFC Wimbledon.
Colwill has predominantly featured in a hybrid role on the left of our defence. That Pochettino has trusted the Academy graduate to do so is testament to the defender's ability and maturity.
'Working with him, I know I’m going to improve,” Colwill explained this week while on international duty. 'He’s such a good manager and he will push me. That’s what I need. I need someone there to give me that kick up the bum and say, "Keep going". That’s what he does.
'The big thing for me is on the first day I came in [for pre-season], he put an arm around me and showed me that he respects me as a person and also as a player. That allows me to work my hardest and makes me want to play my best for him.
'That’s a big difference, him showing that there are two sides. The majority of managers may just look at you like a footballer, he doesn’t. That helps me play my best football.'
It isn't just the Chelsea head coach that has helped Colwill settle into life in the first team at Stamford Bridge, however. The defender name-checked two of the more experienced players in our squad.
'At Chelsea, I also have Ben Chilwell and Thiago Silva, they are leaders in the team for a reason,' Colwill added: 'Their job is to help the young players [in the squad] and I have had that.'
Senior international recognition is the natural next step for Colwill, who was part of the England Under-21s squad that won the European Championship in the summer.
The Three Lions take on Ukraine on Saturday before facing Scotland next Tuesday. Both matches provide Colwill with an opportunity to stake a claim to be included in the England set-up for Euro 2024.
'Playing for Chelsea, one of the biggest clubs in the world, it’s got to be an aim to be in the England team come the Euros,' Levi states. 'There’s still a long time until that comes, so I need to keep pushing myself.
'Every time you come here it’s an opportunity to impress Gareth. It’s like any career, you’ve got to impress and hopefully I get the chance to. Training with the squad in June [ahead of the qualifier against Malta] was a big blessing. I enjoyed it so much and obviously getting formally called up now is amazing, a dream come true.'
