Ruben Loftus-Cheek has stated that it would be ‘amazing’ to go to the World Cup later this year but insists his primary focus is solely on matters relating to Chelsea.
The midfielder, who has shown his versatility by also operating as a right wing-back at times, was part of England’s last World Cup squad in 2018 and hopes he can get the nod from Gareth Southgate to be part of the Three Lions camp in Qatar.
However, the Academy graduate has said that he isn’t thinking that far ahead at the moment and that concentrating on helping Chelsea – where he’s been a regular under Graham Potter – is the only thing at the forefront of his mind.
‘It would be amazing to go to the World Cup and it would mean a lot to me personally,’ Ruben told reporters recently.
‘As a player going to the 2018 World Cup, you see your trajectory only going one way and you hope to be at the next World Cup if everything goes well.
‘A lot has happened in the time since then and I’ve come a long way, with the journey I’ve been on with my injuries and such.
‘Right now, I'm grateful I'm fit and playing consistently. That's all I can ask for and if I go (to the World Cup), it would mean the world.
‘It’s something that's not at the forefront of my mind and my only focus right now is doing my best for Chelsea and helping us kick on with good results.
‘We've got some big games coming up and it would be selfish to think of my personal aspirations over the club's at the moment.’
