Chelsea has felt more and more like home to Lucy Bronze during her first half of a season as a Blue.

The defender made the move to London this summer, joining from Spanish giants Barcelona where she had spent two seasons and won two UEFA Champions League titles and five domestic trophies.

During her time with the Blues thus far, Bronze has helped her side to a 16-game unbeaten run across all competitions. We sit six points clear at the top of the Women's Super League table and qualified for the Champions League quarter-finals.

Featuring on 13 occasions, the 33-year-old has often looked like she has been part of the team for years. But even for someone with her experience, joining a new club marks a period of transition that any player must try and navigate.

‘Coming in I don’t think I was viewed as much as a new player because I’m English and being a bit more established,’ Bronze said. ‘But, at the start, I was definitely finding my rhythm and my place in the team.

‘Once I got my feet on the ground, got settled living here and everything like that, it just felt like I had been here forever.

‘After the first couple of months, I felt really settled in and started to see that both on and off the pitch. I was definitely feeling more and more at home.’

Upon arriving at the Blues, Bronze knew she was joining a club which matched the winning mentality that has served her well throughout her career. She stepped into the unknown in some ways, though, and was pleasantly surprised by what she discovered.

‘I always knew Chelsea had a winning environment,’ Bronze said. ‘I knew from the outside looking in that the girls who played for Chelsea always absolutely loved it.

‘Coming in, I realised what a nice environment it is. There are so many different personalities and it’s one of the most diverse teams to be a part of. And even though it’s so diverse and everyone has their difference, we’re just all so together.

‘I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to integrate into the team. I think because people have come from all over the world, everyone is so open to getting to know each other.’

With a 16-game unbeaten run behind her and with 15 of those matches ending in victory, there has been no shortage of moments of good memories already made. But, there is one encounter which especially stands out to Bronze when we ask about her biggest highlight to date.

‘Playing City at Stamford Bridge,’ Bronze replied. ‘The game itself I really enjoyed and it was such a good match-up. It was highly anticipated.

‘It felt like a game where things clicked, especially in the defensive aspect. But even still, everyone thinks there are things we could still do better. I think in all the games we keep saying there’s so much for us to give and that’s exciting.’

Even after an impressive first half of the season which saw the Blues go unbeaten across 16 games, Bronze believes there is still a new level to be found as we continue to implement Sonia Bompastor's game model and philosophy.

‘You can put any players on the pitch in a Chelsea team and we will grind out a win,’ Bronze said. ‘We might make mistakes, but Sonia has been very open that she wants us to try to play a certain way.

‘It’s crazy that we have all but one game so far and we’re still not quite there yet. We’re not fully developed. We’re still having meetings with Sonia about what can be better.

‘I think most of the other teams in the league are more set in stone with what they’re doing.

‘I think it’s a testament to this Chelsea team that when maybe we make mistakes or we’re not at our best tactically, but every single player will play their part to grind out a result and that’s the most important thing. We still feel we can improve and we'll be looking to do that in the second half of the season.'

When we return to action in January we will be looking to maintain our fine form in the WSL, while we begin our FA Cup and League Cup campaigns.

And an FA Cup run is something Bronze has in her sights. It is a competition she has fond memories of having won it twice with former club Manchester City and played in her first final with her hometown club as a teenager.

Bronze and her team-mates will get our FA Cup campaign underway in our first game of the year when we host Championship outfit Charlton Athletic on Sunday 12 January.

‘I hope we go on a good FA Cup run,’ the defender said. ‘It’s always been a trophy that I’ve been in love with. I played my first final when I was 16 playing for Sunderland which is where I was from, and against Arsenal. It was my first taste of a big game.

‘I’ve got so many different fond memories of FA Cup runs. Especially coming back to England from playing abroad, the FA Cup is definitely a big one.

‘Every time I have played abroad, I’ve always been at Wembley watching the final. I love playing at Wembley, so it would be nice to play there with Chelsea.’
