The Champions League knockout phase demands the very best of players. It's why a certain mentality is required to progress in the competition, something Lucy Bronze emphasised ahead of tonight's quarter-final first leg against Manchester City.

Our European campaign resumes at the Joie Stadium this evening against increasingly familiar opposition: we overcame City in Saturday's League Cup final and, in addition to our two-legged Champions League tie, face them in the Women's Super League on Sunday.

It is a unique situation, one Bronze admits she has not experienced in her storied career, yet the detailed preparation for each game does not change. Nor does the approach from the players.

And as a five-time Champions League winner, Bronze knows better than most what is required to advance through the knockout phase and lift the trophy. Her experience will once again be invaluable.

'You notice the shift [in mindset],' she explains. 'Although there are two legs to play, it's not like the groups; you can’t make up a result in two or three games' time or make as many changes.

'As a player, you get excited for these games. They are the games you want to be 100 per cent ready for. Playing in the Champions League, these are the biggest matches of the season, and playing in the knockouts is different.

'But it’s the same feeling as throughout the second half of the season. Coming back after the winter break, everything matters and silverware is up for grabs. Everything you have spoken about in the first half of the season can come to fruition.'

Bronze has made little secret of her desire to secure a sixth Champions League winners' medal; she highlighted it as one of the motivating factors in joining the Blues last summer from Barcelona.

Yet it is an ambition shared throughout the Chelsea squad. 'Everyone knows our goal is the Champions League,' says the England international. 'So, we have to switch our mindset onto that because it will be different because it’s over two legs.

'We know that if we get a good result away from home, we can take that back to Stamford Bridge where we have played well this season, especially with the crowd behind us.'

Bronze continues: 'Our squad depth – and being able to rely on different players – is huge for us. We have seen this season when players have got injured, others have come in. That’s the depth we’ve got at Chelsea – you lose one superstar and another comes in to replace them.

'That is what carries us forward in general, but also in the Champions League. If you end up without some of your players, you have others who can step into the big games because they also know their roles and what they are there to do.'

Tonight's fixture is something of a homecoming for Bronze, who was based in Manchester for several years across two successful spells with City. But while the 33-year-old returns tonight to a stadium she is 'very familiar with' she says there will be no room for sentimentality.

'I’m looking forward to going back and obviously, we're playing a team that we know really well,' she says. 'I’ve played a team multiple times before, but not four times back-to-back. I don’t think that’s happened many times. It’s such a random coincidence.

'I’m assuming there will be a couple of changes from both teams and some tactical adjustments, but that’ll be interesting to see.

'I played against City in the Champions League when I was at Lyon – probably my first moment of it being different – and in the second leg, I scored the winner that took Lyon through against the team I had just left.

'So, I've lived so many of those experiences already at other clubs and it's just a case of focusing on the game.'
