On the first day of the European Under-21 Championship, Mykhailo Mudryk and Ian Maatsen began on the bench for their respective nations although the latter was given second-half action.
Maatsen is part of the Netherlands Under-21 squad. They took on neighbours Belgium and hit the woodwork and had two cleared off the line in a goalless first half. Maatsen was introduced with just over 20 minutes to play and able to advance on the left, he was involved in moves that created two late chances. Those were not taken and with the Belgians unable to convert opportunities which also came their way, the match ended 0-0.
Mudryk watched on as Ukraine went ahead in the first half against Croatia thanks to a fine solo effort by Shakhtar Donetsk player Oleksiy Kashchuk. Another Shakhtar player, Danylo Sikan, headed in a Kashchuk cross for a 2-0 lead straight after half-time and that was the final result in a comfortable win.
Mudryk was a late addition to the Ukraine squad for the tournament, which is being held in Georgia and Romania. The 22-year-old, who featured at the start of qualifying, is available having played two games for the senior side at the start of the month along with three team-mates who have also joined the Under-21s.
Maatsen, who is 21, spent last season enjoying a successful loan spell at Burnley where he helped them top the Championship table.
Ukraine next play joint-hosts Romania on Saturday with the Netherlands taking on Portugal.
