Chelsea may have beaten Crystal Palace 4-0 but Catarina Macario believes the Blues should have been even more ruthless in attack - something which will be key if we are to overturn the deficit in our Champions League semi-final against Barcelona.

The forward scored twice, joining Guro Reiten and Mia Fishel on the scoresheet, as we triumphed over Crystal Palace at Kingsmeadow on Wednesday evening, giving us a healthy six-point lead at the top of the Women’s Super League table with three WSL matches remaining.

However, by the Blues’ own ever-high standards, the USA international felt the performance could have been even better, especially after our opponents had a player sent off early in the second half.

‘It definitely wasn’t easy,’ said Macario. ‘We are Chelsea, we have high standards and we always want to dominate a match.

‘We did really well in the first half but I think in the second half we dropped off a little bit, especially when they went down to 10 players, when you would expect the opposite. We’ll take the win, take the three points, but we want to make sure we dominate the whole match.

‘That’s what makes us Chelsea and that’s why we’ve been winning and been dominating in this league for so long, because we have those high standards and we really are never satisfied.

‘We just have to take a look at ourselves and know we can’t relax. Even when it’s 4-0 every goal matters. At the same time we’ll take the three points, try to learn from and it keep getting better and better.’

Chelsea bounced back in some style following the weekend’s UEFA Women’s Champions League defeat to Barcelona, losing 4-1 in the first leg of our semi-final away in Spain.

Macario was pleased the Blues managed to put that disappointment out of their minds to get the job done against Crystal Palace, and believes the high-scoring performance can give us confidence for the second leg of the semis at Stamford Bridge this Sunday.

‘The most important thing was staying focused on the task in hand, knowing that we still have a league to play for, knowing that every game and every win is important,' she said.

‘It was very important to get the three points to give us some confidence, to know we can score a good amount of goals. It’s another learning experience to know how ruthless we need to be.

‘We were obviously frustrated with the loss. Again, because we’re Chelsea we’re never happy with losing, especially 4-1. But we’re confident in ourselves and we have to believe, just get after it, try to take confidence from scoring four goals in this game as well. We just have to work hard every day and be ruthless no matter what.

‘We’ll just take it one day at a time, starting with recovering on Thursday, knowing we just need to be ourselves on Sunday and anything is possible, but it will take everyone to push us over the line.’
