Noni Madueke can’t wait for his first experience of playing at Wembley and feels last night’s performance against Middlesbrough was fully deserving of a place in the Carabao Cup final.
We overturned a one-goal deficit from the first leg of our Carabao Cup semi-final in emphatic fashion at Stamford Bridge, thrashing Middlesbrough 6-1 to book our place in the final, with Noni Madueke netting his fourth goal of the season to complete the scoring.
The winger, who also scored the equaliser in our win over Wimbledon in the second round of the competition, believes this latest victory shows we are worthy of our place at Wembley.
However, he knows the most important thing is to continue in the same way in the final to get our hands on the trophy when we meet either Liverpool or Fulham at the national stadium on 25 February.
‘It’s great, well deserved,’ said Madueke. ‘Obviously, we came into the game a goal down but the approach from the boys was fantastic from start to finish. So to get a resounding win, come away with a 6-1 win, we’re happy.
‘It’s massive, a great achievement. Getting to the final is nice, but we want to win it. That’s what we want, so we’ve got to do everything we can to win the final.’
It is an occasion that Madueke can’t wait for, given it will be his first opportunity to take to the famous Wembley pitch where so much history has been made.
It is a history he is well aware of, as the first professional match he attended as a 10-year-old boy was a family trip to the stadium to see the Blues in action in the 2012 FA Cup semi-finals, a competition we would go on to win that season.
‘I’ve never played at Wembley before,’ he added. ‘It’ll be a first, I’m buzzing. Of course, you dream of doing it.
‘I actually remember going to Wembley and watching Chelsea versus Tottenham. Didier Drogba scored that banger with his left foot and they won 5-1 that day.
‘So it’ll be a good occasion and I’m looking forward to it.’
Noni has also set his sights further afield, though, hoping we can carry our Carabao Cup form into other competitions following the big win over Middlesbrough, starting in our next match on Friday evening when we host Aston Villa at the Bridge in the FA Cup fourth round.
‘We’re in the final of one competition, so we want to keep that going. We want to continue our streak here at Stamford Bridge too.
‘We’re making it a tough place to come to again, Middlesbrough was a statement win in that. So now we go onto the next game and try to do the same.’
