Noni Madueke praised the Blues’ fight and determination after holding on to an important 3-2 victory against Luton to round off 2023 with three points.

Chelsea got off to the perfect start at Kenilworth Road as Cole Palmer broke the deadlock to put us in front. It was eventually followed by Madueke’s second goal in as many games with Palmer making it three after the break.

Despite a late Luton comeback, the Blues dug deep and maintained their composure to secure victory on the road. Madueke acknowledged the challenge posed by the Hatters, but felt that Chelsea deserved to come away with the win.

‘It was difficult at the end but it was a great start to be fair,’ Madueke said.

‘We probably made it a little bit harder for ourselves than it should’ve been, but the boys dug deep. This place is a hard place to come to. A lot of top sides have come here and struggled so three points is all we wanted going into the New Year, and we did that so I’m happy.

‘I feel like their fans give them a lift especially going into the second half. They are such a threat from crosses and set-pieces going into the box.

‘Once they gathered momentum it was tough in the last bit of the game, but I felt like we dug deep and got the three points so I’m proud.’

After converting the match-winning spot-kick against Crystal Palace last time out, the winger earned himself an opportunity to start in Mauricio Pochettino’s XI against Luton and the 21-year-old delivered with a strike into the roof of the net.

He continued: ‘The manager is not so much on me about scoring goals, but being as connected with the team as possible and working hard.

‘I try to make that my foundation to build on at the start of the game. I know that if I do that then my individual quality will shine through a lot of time. I’m chuffed with the goal for sure.’

Speaking on Player of the Match Palmer, who assisted Noni’s goal, Madueke praised his long-time friend and teammate, and is hopeful for more in the future.

‘I have played with Cole for ages – since Under-15s – so I know his game,’ he added.

‘He is a great player and great for players like me. He is always in between the lines and I know that as soon as he gets the ball on the half-turn, he has the composure to find me like he did for my goal. Long may his form continue.’
