Noni Madueke scored for England Under-21s for the second game in a row, but it was not enough as they suffered a last-gasp defeat to Ukraine in qualification for the 2025 European Under-21 Championship.

The Blues winger had found the net twice as the Young Lions thrashed Serbia 9-1 on Thursday, and did so again as they faced Ukraine in Slovakia in a match full of drama.

Noni Madueke and his fellow Chelsea man Bashir Humphreys – who is on loan in the Championship with Swansea City this season – were both in the starting line-up for England Under-21s, but they fell behind and went in at the half-time break 2-0 down.

Madueke impressed and was arguably England’s best player throughout, meaning it was no surprise when he started the second-half comeback with an excellent curled finish from Liam Delap’s flick-on. It was completed in the 89th minute when the away side's pressure paid off with an equaliser.

It was not to be, though, as Ukraine struck again in the fourth minute of added time to inflict England’s first defeat of this qualifying campaign.

There was little action for Chelsea’s senior internationals this evening, meaning Ian Maatsen will have to wait a little longer to make his debut for the Netherlands. He was an unused substitute as an injury-time Virgil van Dijk penalty gave them a 1-0 win at Greece in Euro 2024 qualifying.

Nicolas Jackson was not involved for Senegal as they beat Cameroon 1-0 in a friendly in France, having earlier withdrawn from their squad due to injury. The striker will hope to play a part when the two countries meet again in January, having been drawn together in the group stage of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations last week.

Tragic news from Belgium

Football was of only minor importance in Brussels given the events elsewhere in the city on Monday evening.

Belgium were playing Sweden in a Euro 2024 qualifier, for which the home side are already assured of their place at the tournament, and Romelu Lukaku had equalised from the penalty spot to make it 1-1.

However, following the news that two Swedish nationals had died in a suspected terrorist shooting in Brussels, the match was abandoned at half-time for security reasons.
