After making her first start for Chelsea in the Women's Super League, Maelys Mpome was overjoyed. Her mood was helped by the Blues claiming an important victory thanks to an injury-time winner.

The 21-year-old French defender replaced Nathalie Bjorn at centre-back, making her third WSL appearance of the season and her first in the starting XI, as the Blues came from 1-0 down to defeat the Toffees at Kingsmeadow.

Everton took the lead after 51 minutes before Mayra Ramirez levelled things with a composed finish just over 10 minutes later. We applied pressure late on and it paid off as Lauren James netted the winner in injury time, firing the ball into the bottom corner from range.

'I enjoyed it a lot,' Mpome said after the win. 'We got a great win at the end. I'm just so happy to be here. It means a lot to get my first start.

'I feel like I have been working hard and I have the confidence from the coaches and the team. I was composed and a lot of that comes from playing with these girls.

'They make everything good for me on the pitch. We worked hard this week so I could come in and play my game.'

Mpome took her place in a defence which has rotated as of late, with Ashley Lawrence filling in for Lucy Bronze who made her return to the pitch after a three-game absence as a second-half substitute against the Merseyside club.

'It just shows we have a lot of talent in the team,' Mpome added. 'We can try a lot of different things which is a good thing when you play as many games as we do.'

The comeback win against Everton means we remain seven points clear at the top of the WSL table, now with 40 points after 14 games played. And after coming from a losing position, Mpome believes, it reflects the character of this Chelsea team.

'It feels so good to get the win,' the defender reflected. 'It was a great goal from LJ. It shows our mindset is strong and we can always find a way. We might be used to leading games, but it is good to be able to show that we can come back and win.'
