For the December instalment of our Making History Everyday campaign, Chelsea Football Club and Chelsea Foundation reflect on the journeys of Becky Gordon and Xaymaca Awoyungbo, the inaugural winners of the Blue Creator Fund, a project aimed at empowering the next generation of creators.
It was open to anyone in the UK aged 18 to 30 from an under-represented background working in creative spaces who wants to take their career to the next step, and Becky and Xaymaca were the first from over 1000 applicants to benefit from £15,000 worth of funding to produce a creative project.
Xaymaca and Becky are making history by paving the way for up-and-coming Black creatives, including through their projects, which highlight the experiences within, and honour the contributions of, the Black Chelsea family.
Aspiring jewellery designer Becky created Unsung, a collection of signet rings to champion 100 unsung heroes of Chelsea's community. Emerging film director Xaymaca explored what it means to be Black and a Chelsea fan in his documentary film Blue is the Colour. At the start of December they showcased their projects at a special event held at the Saatchi Gallery, to a room of creators from Chelsea FC, football and the wider creative community.
With the Chelsea Foundation, and alongside Reece James and Marc Cucurella, Becky and Xaymaca also spoke to future history makers and sixth form students from a local school about their journeys with the Blue Creator Fund. Both winners presented their projects and experiences to encourage young students to unlock their creativity and apply for next year’s fund.
Reflecting on the Blue Creator Fund, Becky said, ‘I’d like young and aspiring creatives to be able to see themselves in Xaymaca, myself, and future BCF recipients across industries which currently lack diversity.'
Xaymaca added, 'We see creativity every day on the field so that same creativity should be reflected off the field. We need to find new ways to tell engaging stories that connect with supporters from all walks of life.
Speaking at the Saatchi Gallery event, Chelsea FC director and trustee of Chelsea Foundation, Barbara Charone, confirmed the extension of the Blue Creator Fund for a second year, ensuring the chance for others to follow in the footsteps of Becky and Xaymaca.
