Malo Gusto talks about connecting with the fans in the matchday programme for tonight’s game against West Ham United.
Speaking to the programme exclusively on the day he celebrated two years as a Chelsea player, the Frenchman discussed the importance of the link between the supporters in the stands and the players on the pitch, something he has relished since he broke into the team last season.
'The Chelsea fans have always been top with me, and with the players in general,' he said. 'We have top fans around the whole world as well, and during the game, in the stadium, the Premier League atmosphere is always top. We try to stay very close with the supporters because it’s important – they push us as much as they can, and they do it well, so we are very proud to have these kinds of fans.
'It’s up to us to show them that we know what we have to do, and to give our best on the pitch. Even if sometimes the game is complicated, if you show your desire to win, that’s the thing they respect and they like the most. So I think that’s the thing that you have to show on the pitch, not just for the fans but also for you and your team-mates.'
Another way to earn your place in fan folklore is to score a spectacular goal against one of our London rivals, something the programme's other interview subject, Mario Stanic, did in this fixture back in 2000.
The Croatian announced his arrival in the Premier League with a spectacular Goal of the Month-winner, as part of a brace in a 4-2 win over West Ham on his home debut. He still remembers that goal vividly.
'A lot of people ask me about the feeling and, you know, it’s very difficult to explain,' he says. 'Either you are very lucky to have that kind of experience, or you aren’t. I was really lucky to have the possibility to play this game, to win this game and to score those two goals that were very important. One of them, of course, was an amazing one, but don’t ask me how I did it because it was some kind of moment of inspiration.'
Stanic, who is now assistant manager at Shakhtar Donetsk, talks about life with a Ukrainian club that cannot play at their home ground, and reflects on four years as a Blue, during which time he became a firm fan.
'I’m supporting Chelsea,' he said, 'it’s in my heart and it was a beautiful time, a beautiful memory to stay there for four years. It’s inside of me.'
Elsewhere in the programme, there’s a look back at Eidur Gudjohnsen’s ‘Blond Maradona’ era in midfield, and all your favourite regular features, including columns from Enzo Maresca, Reece James, Sonia Bompastor and our Academy coaches, not to mention all the info you need ahead of the big game.
