Ahead of Chelsea's Carabao Cup third-round tie away at Manchester City, Graham Potter has revealed injury doubts over Jorginho's availability as well as the latest on Reece James, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Mateo Kovacic's progress and the chances of youngsters Omari Hutchinson and Lewis Hall featuring at the Etihad Stadium.
Man City vs Chelsea Jorginho and Kepa Arrizabalaga injury update
Graham Potter revealed in his press conference that he has one additional injury to contend with following Sunday's match against Arsenal, with Jorginho being added to the growing Chelsea injury list ahead of our trip to face Manchester City in the Carabao Cup.
He also provided the latest on Kepa Arrizabalaga's injury, confirming this cup tie comes too soon for the Spanish goalkeeper to be involved.
'Jorginho has a slight problem with his foot, so he’s doubtful for tomorrow,' said Potter. 'Apart from that we’re with pretty much the same group that we had.
'Kepa is still unavailable. We’ll see about the World Cup. He’s got to take it day by day, it’s a tear in the plantar fascia, so it depends on how he responds, how he responds to pain, how comfortable he feels, but at the moment it’s not so positive.'
Man City vs Chelsea Reece James injury update
Another player who is not able to be involved at the Etihad Stadium is Reece James, with Potter giving an update on how his race against time to be available for the upcoming World Cup is going following a knee injury.
'No miracles, unfortunately. He's progressing well. Reece was outside today, had a little jog, but nothing to report in terms of anything else.
'We haven’t really put a timescale on it. It’s just how he responds, we don’t want to rush anything. I certainly don’t want to put any timescales on it, that’s for him and the doctors and the physios. He’s optimistic, you need to be.'
Man City vs Chelsea Mateo Kovacic injury update
Potter has had to be patient with his use of Mateo Kovacic recently, with the midfielder dealing with a knee problem, and our head coach explained how the player and staff have been managing the injury.
'He’s just had an ongoing knee issue that’s a little bit of discomfort, but it hasn’t stopped him completely. Certainly we’ve had to be conscious of that fact during this period. It’s not a massive problem for him, he’ll be fine for the World Cup, it’s fine.
'I wouldn’t say he’s necessarily 100 per cent but he’s not far away from that. It’s just that we’ve managed it really well and he’s managed it really well. He’s a top professional, he’s done everything he can in terms of rehab and looking after himself in the gym, making sure his body’s as good as it can be.
'He’s a fantastic professional, but I think it’s been going on pretty much from pre-season and we’ve tried to make the best of it.'
Chance for the young players
The Carabao Cup is often seen as a chance to give opportunities to younger players, especially with so many members of Potter's senior squad suffering with injuries.
Potter confirmed that two young Chelsea players, Omari Hutchinson and Lewis Hall, will both be in his squad to face Manchester City tomorrow.
'Omari Hutchinson is in the squad, Lewis Hall is in the squad. They’ve impressed. They’ve been training with us for a while and they’ve got some good qualities.
'They’re young players that we just need to nurture and take the right steps with, but they’ll be in the squad and involved.'
Man City vs Chelsea suspensions
There are no suspensions for Chelsea, but Manchester City are without Joao Cancelo after he was sent off in their 2-1 win over Fulham on Saturday.
Accumulated yellow cards only count in the specific competition they are received in, meaning a clean for the players in our first match of this season's Carabao Cup, but red card bans carry across all domestic competitions.
Man City vs Chelsea injury list
Wesley Fofana is continuing his rehab from a knee injury, while N'Golo Kante is recovering from hamstring surgery. Those two are expected to be out until after the World Cup, as is Ben Chilwell after the wing-back underwent a scan on the injury he picked up against Dinamo Zagreb last week.
Kalvin Phillips is close to a return for Manchester City, with Pep Guardiola confirming he is in their squad for this game and could be named among the substitutes, but Kyle Walker is not expected to feature before the World Cup.
Man City vs Chelsea referee and VAR
Referee: Simon Hooper
There will be no VAR for this game, as it is only used for the final and semi-finals in the Carabao Cup.
