Christopher Nkunku’s good pre-season form continued against Club America, as he struck his third goal in as many games, and the attacker has earned praise from head coach Enzo Maresca.

Nkunku confidently despatched our first penalty of the night before his skill and speed won our second, converted by Noni Madueke to put the seal on a commanding 3-0 win over Club America.

Allied to Nkunku’s technical strengths is a versatility that suits Maresca’s system, something the head coach expanded on in the wake of our first pre-season victory.

‘I know Christo from years ago,’ said Maresca. ‘I loved him before I joined this club. In the way we want to play, he is the ideal player.

'He can play in the pocket, in the nine, on the wing. At this moment we are using him in the pocket and he is doing very well.’

Nkunku has started each of our three games in an advanced central role and, after a frustrating first campaign in blue because of injury, Maresca is hopeful this accumulation of game time will stand him in good stead for the season ahead.

‘The reason he is playing every game is because we know he is coming back from injuries and needs minutes,’ noted Maresca.

‘He is doing very well and also game after game he is getting better.'
