Enzo Maresca has confirmed two Chelsea defenders will miss tomorrow evening’s UEFA Conference League play-off first leg against Servette.

The head coach reported Reece James remains unavailable, while someone who did play in our Premier League loss to Manchester City will be rested for the visit of the Swiss Cup winners.

‘Wes Fofana is out because he played the other day, and after a one-year injury he cannot play [again] on Thursday,’ said Maresca. ‘Some decisions are to take care of the players.

‘Reece is still injured. He is in the [squad] list but he cannot play.’

Maresca wants to use tomorrow’s game as a springboard for the season as he seeks his first competitive victory as our head coach. Chelsea will start as the heavy favourites but Maresca is determined to not allow any complacency to creep in, well aware of the ramifications of a negative result.

Without James, there is the possibility Enzo Fernandez will skipper the side once again. Maresca was asked if the midfielder has been confirmed as the new vice-captain.

‘Reece is the captain, then we have three, four more captains, like Enzo,’ he replied.

‘The other day was clear. Reece was not there, Enzo was on the pitch and was the captain, so he is one of the vice-captains.

‘I’m thinking to nominate one or two new captains, also to give them more responsibility so they don’t think they can’t be the captain because they are 20 or 21. Some of them have to take one step forward to have more responsibility.

‘For example, Levi: he’s a young player with a fantastic profile. I love Levi, but in terms of personality, if he’s able to take one step forward he can become a complete player in all the aspects. It’s just not Levi, I’m thinking about two or three more.

‘I’ve said before I like all of them to be brave and take responsibility. In the end it’s only one who is captain for each game, but I like all of them to be brave enough to take responsibility.’
