Strikers are often judged solely by the number of goals scored but as Enzo Maresca has stressed, Nicolas Jackson offers the Blues so much more.
Jackson made it four goals in five Premier League matches so far this season during our 3-0 win over West Ham United, increasing his incredible record in London derbies to ten in 12 games. And that is before you add in assists, like the one he got for Cole Palmer’s third today.
The Senegal international also continually runs in behind the opposition defence, links up well with our attacking players and, as Maresca made a point of highlighting at the London Stadium, works tirelessly for the team out of possession.
Maresca told Chelsea TV: ‘He was very good. Not only because he scored twice; the way he works off the ball has been fantastic. He and Cole, sometimes had to defend three-on-two.
‘So I am happy with Nicolas in terms of numbers – goals and assists – but especially happy because the way he has worked has been fantastic.’
Pre-match Maresca had been asked if Jackson would drop to the bench in favour of Christopher Nkunku after the Frenchman came on to score the winner against Bournemouth.
But Jackson started for the fifth consecutive Premier League match this season and repaid his manager by scoring his 20th and 21st goals for the club in what was his 50th appearance for the Blues.
In his post-match press conference, Maresca added: ‘It is fantastic [for him]. In terms of the numbers, so goals and assists, he is doing well since I arrived. Off the ball, he is working hard and if a player misses one or two chances, that does not necessarily mean he is not playing well.
‘It can happen. All players miss chances and the important thing is the complete performance. Against Bournemouth, it was a good performance from Nicolas but we changed something and Christo came inside [the game] and scored the goal to win the game and that is what we expect from all of them.’
