Nineteen years ago, in the Philips Stadion in Eindhoven, Enzo Maresca scored twice to help Sevilla beat Middlesbrough 4-0 in the UEFA Cup final. It was the Spanish side’s first taste of European glory.
Our head coach’s goals came late in the piece, the first a predatory close-range effort, the second a sweetly-timed left-footer from the edge of the box.
Since that glorious night in the Netherlands, Sevilla have become a dominant force in continental football, winning six more UEFA Cups/Europa Leagues, as well as a UEFA Super Cup.
At Cobham today, at his media conference, Maresca was asked if Chelsea triumphing in the UEFA Conference League this season could act as a similar spark for the current crop of Blues. Most are yet to enjoy the taste of silverware since signing for the club.
‘It could be, even if Sevilla’s history is very different from Chelsea,’ Maresca replied.
‘Chelsea are a club that fought for important titles every year in the past, the Champions League, the Premier League, this kind of thing. It’s a bit different from Sevilla which is a club that had never won a European competition until that day. Since then, they have won more titles.
‘For sure, when you start to win, it’s something that can be addictive. You can enjoy how to win games, and hopefully it can be for us exactly the same.’
One player likely to be central to any trophy triumph is Cole Palmer. The attacker, who Maresca said will be monitored ahead of tomorrow’s match against Copenhagen after illness, missed his first penalty since joining Chelsea in the weekend win over Leicester.
Maresca stated today he has no doubt Palmer remains undeterred by that setback, praising his bravery in stepping up to the spot.
He said: ‘Cole is going to miss more penalties, and the reason why is because he is the one in charge of shooting penalties.
‘If you don’t shoot, you don’t miss. I have no doubt in the future he will miss more penalties but I also have no doubt he score more penalties. The penalty the other day didn’t affect him in a negative way.’
