Enzo Maresca has discussed Chelsea's strength in depth in the attacking positions and explained where the likes of Jadon Sancho and Pedro Neto fit into his plans, plus talked about the battle for the striker position at the Bridge.

Last week’s 1-0 win away at Bournemouth underlined the wealth of attacking options available to Maresca this season. Noni Madueke, Cole Palmer, Neto and Nicolas Jackson started the match at the Vitality Stadium before Christopher Nkunku, Joao Felix and Sancho were introduced from the bench, with Sancho and Nkunku combining brilliantly for our late winning goal.

That’s not to mention Mykhailo Mudryk and Marc Guiu, who were also among the substitutes last Saturday, plus players like Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who was ill last weekend, and talented youngsters like Carney Chukwuemeka and Tyrique George, who didn't make the squad.

Ahead of this weekend’s Premier League trip across the capital to face West Ham United, Maresca clarified where he sees each of our wealth of attacking options fitting into his preferred 4-2-3-1 system, which has been predominantly used so far in 2024/25.

The answer came following a question about the prospect of Neto being used on the right wing, with the summer signing from Wolves largely featuring on the left wing so far due to the exceptional form of Madueke this season.

Maresca said: ‘As left wingers, we have Jadon and Misha [Mudryk]. As right wingers, we have Noni and Pedro. As attacking midfielders, we have Joao Felix and Cole. As a No9, we have Nicolas, Christo and Marc. We do not have so many players, we have two players for each position.'

He continued: ‘Christo can play as a No9 or as an attacking midfielder and a winger. Kiernan can play in the pocket and wide. Pedro was playing as a left-winger because Jadon wasn’t here and fit and, between Misha, Pedro and Jadon, I preferred Pedro for that one game. But that doesn’t mean always I will prefer Pedro.

‘So the squad is quite clear in terms of positions. All of them have their position and we have two players in each position. But because they are versatile, good and can play in different positions, for sure we can move them. For example, Christo played the first game against Manchester City as a winger.’

Despite having all of those options at his disposal, one constant in our Premier League fixtures has been the spearhead of our attack, with Jackson starting as the central striker in all four of our matches in that competition so far.

The Senegalese international has rewarded the head coach for his selection with two goals and an assist in his last three league appearances, leaving Maresca obviously pleased with his contribution.

Nkunku replaced Jackson in the striking role at Bournemouth to good effect, as he scored the winning goal, which prompted a question about the pair in today's pre-West Ham press conference.

‘Nicolas is doing very good day by day in the training sessions and then in the Premier League games,’ continued the Italian.

‘I think against City he was very good, Wolves away he scored and he gave an assist. Against Palace he was fighting until the end. At Bournemouth again he did well, had two or three chances he missed, but sometimes if you miss chances it doesn’t mean you’re not playing well.

‘At the moment, for me, Nicolas is our striker and I don’t have any doubts because of the way he is working day by day and the way he is working on and off the ball in the matches.’

However, Enzo also highlighted that the different strengths and talents of Jackson and Nkunku give him more solutions to the various challenges we will face against different opponents, as seen to such good effect with the Frenchman’s decisive strike against Bournemouth.

‘We used Christo as a No9 in the last game for the last 10 minutes. He is completely different to Nicolas in terms qualities and skills,' Maresca said.

‘Nico is a No9, Christo we can use as a No9 but in a different way. I am completely happy with the squad we have – not only Christo and Nico – and the players are versatile.

‘We can use Christo as a No9 or in the pocket. He didn’t like to play wide as he prefers to play in the centre, but sometimes in terms of balance, sometimes players have to play in positions that aren’t always best for them. The important thing is they adapt and try to give their best.’
