Enzo Maresca has outlined why he believes our 4-2 win over Brighton & Hove Albion represents our most important moment of the 2024/25 season so far and in his time as Chelsea head coach.
An incredible first half saw six goals scored, four of them by the Blues and all from the left boot of Cole Palmer. That gave us the platform needed to go on and secure a 4-2 victory and make it three wins in a row in the Premier League.
Maresca's joy was clear at the final whistle as he celebrated the three points with his players and the Chelsea supporters in the stands, but the Italian explained his jubilation wasn't the result of anything particular he had seen during the match.
It was instead the importance he saw from the situation around the game, as we brought our impressive away form back to the Bridge in the league.
'I don’t think I enjoyed this win more than the rest, it was simply because I think it was our most important game of the season for many reasons and I was happy with the result and the performance,' said Maresca.
'It’s always nice to share that kind of moment with our fans. After two wins in a row away it is always difficult to keep that momentum because many times you can think two wins away and you can drop a little bit.
'So it was important to continue with that momentum, and also the game didn’t start in the way we planned the game. So I think it was just a good moment.'
It was our work in possession that pleased Maresca most, with the Italian admitting we had to readjust our defensive plan to combat Brighton's set-up.
'I think off the ball we struggled in the first half because they surprised us, they changed something. On the ball, the game was exactly the way we planned, in the first half and second half.
'Then at half-time, we adjusted a little bit the way we were pressing. I think in the second half we didn’t concede anything in terms of chances. The first half we conceded two goals and some moments. For me the reason why was the way they played on the ball, they surprised us a little bit.
'In terms of the way we played on the ball, I think we scored four, we could have scored three or four more already in the first half.'
Maresca wasn't overly concerned with the goals conceded by his side, with the second, in particular, a result of the risks he is willing to take by playing out from defence.
'The two goals we conceded - the first one is a mistake, the second was not about trying to play from the back. It was more about reading the moment. We were 1-0 down and then we were 3-1 up. In that moment we didn’t need to take any risks. It’s more for them to take risks not us.
'I said to Robert and I said to the players, from now we are going to concede 10 more goals like the way we conceded that second goal, because it is the way we want to play, and we’ve already scored goals with Robert involved in the build-up.
'But it’s important that after the mistake the team completely continued the same way. That means they enjoy it, they like it and they see that also we will win games playing like that.'
