There were plenty of reasons for Enzo Maresca to be pleased after seeing his team triumph 3-0 away at West Ham United, among them the performances of Moises Caicedo and Jadon Sancho.
The goals at the London Stadium may have come from Nicolas Jackson (twice) and Cole Palmer, but they were far from the only players deserving of praise, after an excellent team performance maintained our 100 per cent record on the road in this season’s Premier League.
Caicedo has started more matches than any other Chelsea player so far in 2024/25 and his minutes on the pitch in the Premier League are only behind Levi Colwill and Robert Sanchez – who have both played every minute. In the league, the Ecuadorian has missed just the last 14 minutes of the 6-2 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers, after being withdrawn with the three points already secured.
It is no surprise to hear, then, that our head coach has been enjoying working with the midfielder right from the first day the Italian arrived at Cobham in the summer.
‘He is top,’ said Maresca. ‘His performance yesterday was very good, but since we started Moi has been fantastic and yesterday once again he was top.’
Enzo was also pleased with the contribution of Sancho on the winger’s first start for the Blues since joining from Manchester United on transfer deadline day.
‘Jadon did well, it was exactly what we were expecting from him,’ continued our head coach.
‘He worked off the ball very hard with [Aaron] Wan-Bissaka, and also in the second half. Then Pedro [Neto] came on and he did well, so we are happy.’
For the second consecutive game, there was also a clean sheet for goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, following the 1-0 win away at Bournemouth the previous week.
Again, Maresca chose to share the praise around, pointing out the contribution of the whole team in shutting out West Ham, including those two aforementioned goalscorers leading the press.
‘I am happy for Robert, for the defence, for all the team, because probably the reason we had a clean sheet on Saturday is because Nicolas and Cole pressed very high and very good.
‘Overall it was a good performance from all of them.’
