Enzo Maresca explained why he is pleased with the recent performances of Moises Caicedo and Jadon Sancho, as well as how individual player development is central to his plans for the team's overall improvement.

Speaking to the media at Cobham ahead of Sunday's away trip to face leaders Liverpool in the Premier League, Maresca was asked about the performances of two members of his squad, winger Sancho and central midfielder Caicedo.

Starting with the Ecuador international, our head coach pointed out the individual work he and his staff are doing every day to help Caicedo continue to improve after a string of impressive performances during the opening stages of the season, but pointed out that work is a key part of his plans for all of the squad and the team as a whole.

'I really believe that to improve as a team you need to improve the players,' explained Maresca, giving an insight into his coaching philosophy.

'We are trying, not only with Moi but with all the players, to dedicate time to spend time with them for extra work almost every day. At the end of the session we keep players for extra work and Moi is one of those players.

'So we are happy with the way he is playing. We didn’t have any doubt about him as a player or as a person and we are very happy with the way he is playing in this moment.'

The Italian was then asked about Sancho, one of the newer additions to his squad following a transfer deadline day switch to Stamford Bridge from Manchester United.

He has already shown the kind of exciting talent he can bring to the team, especially in one-v-one situations on the wing, leaving Maresca pleased with his start to life with the Blues, even if he knows there is much more to come from Sancho in the future.

'Jadon is doing well, the only thing he needs to do is to continue in the same way, working hard every day,' continued Enzo.

'As I’ve said many times, for sure he is going to help us because we really believe he is a special player, but the only way to confirm that is to work hard every day and to never be happy, in terms of always being ambitious, wanting more and more and more.'

The performances of Caicedo and Sancho are just a small part of why Maresca is pleased with how things have progressed during these early stages of his time as Chelsea head coach.

So far things have been matching his expectations, leaving him confident that the team is in a good place for this stage of his first season, with a promising base to continue building from.

'I am very happy because what I expected in terms of players and level and style, I can see clearly that it’s there. I’ve said many times that no matter who is going to play, you can see clearly the way we want to play.

'For sure there are games that we could do better, but also I think that at this moment it’s normal because we just started two or three months ago.

'But I’m very happy because it’s one of the best clubs in the world and I’m very excited and feel very lucky to spend my time and share my time with this squad. So I’m very happy.'
