There were shades of the win in Russia midweek about the way this game was won at a chilly Turf Moor, with the Blues going in at half-time a goal to the good and then stepping on the pedal in the second half to make our superiority count, although unlike the Krasnodar game, the opposition today were limited to just one sniff at goal in each half.Indeed we continue to look better and better in defence and this was a fourth clean sheet in a row.Before we scored and following on from the Cesar Azpilicueta and Harry Maguire incident at Old Trafford last week, there were again questions about VAR when Ben Chilwell appeared fouled in the Burnley penalty area early in the game but once we had taken the lead on 27 minutes, with the way we were moving the ball the three points were never really in doubt.Zouma’s goal came from a Mason Mount corner and Werner’s was a sharp finish from a Ziyech pass.The victory moves Frank Lampard’s men up to fourth.

The selection

There was a blow before kick-off when Christian Pulisic, originally pencilled in to begin the game, had to be withdrawn.After the long trip to Russia and back midweek, Frank Lampard originally made six changes to the side but that was reduced to five when Pulisic had a problem with his hamstring in the pre-match warm-up. That meant no rest for Werner who moved from the subs to a starting 11 which also included the return of Thiago Silva to skipper the side from the back. Tammy Abraham spearheaded the attack which also contained Ziyech who was making his first Premier League start.

There was early work for Edouard Mendy to do when in the fifth minute, a ball over our defence left him facing Ashley Barnes. Although the Burnley striker reached the ball first, our keeper was out at him quickly and the attempt at the target sailed well over. That would prove to be the best opening for the Lancashire side in the first 45.At the other end, there were a couple of Reece James crosses in the early stages. One sought out Ben Chilwell arriving at the far post. The left-back received a shove as the ball cleared him but there was nothing given by the referee and for the second weekend running, VAR failed to deliver for Chelsea.

Hakim hits the target again

It did not knock Chilwell out of his stride for long and another run to that area on 20 minutes was spotted by Ziyech who fired the ball forward from deep, but with too much power to hit its target.From that point on our passing game moved up a gear. James drilled over some more crosses and Abraham was crowded out when he threatened to break through, but it looked like a goal was coming, and on 26 minutes it duly arrived.The threat emanated from our right, with Werner nipping the ball back to Abraham who laid it off for Ziyech to fire low into the net. Nick Pope had been wrong-footed but there was no deflection to deceive the England keeper, although maybe he had been partially unsighted as the shot whistled by a defender.Either way, Ziyech’s delayed start to the season continues to shine with this goal following on from his first in Russia on Wednesday.

Sadly Werner, who also scored in the Champions League, could not get on the end of a lovely cross from Chilwell as Chelsea went in search of a second goal before half-time. Abraham with a great ball out wide initiated that attack. The German's chance would come after the break.In the final five minutes before the interval, there were a couple of loose moments from the Blues as we defended. Those created danger but it was Chelsea who ended the first 45 minutes on the front foot when James had the chance to seek out Werner with an early cross, but Kevin Long’s block in front of goal prevented a tap-in for the no.11.

Acceleration after the interval

Burnley changed their shape and brought on Jay Rodriguez at half-time but it did them little good.Mount from a free-kick and Chilwell in open play both hit shots on target but too close to Pope early in the second half, but the move for the defender’s chance, which involved great skill from Havertz and Ziyech, promised much for the rest of the game.There was one shot that went close to the Chelsea goal from Barnes after Havertz had misplaced a pass, but the midfielder atoned when he won the ball high up the other end of the pitch to create a chance for Ziyech to go for goal. It led to the corner that resulted in goal number two.Taken expertly by Mount and met by Zouma’s head, Pope had no chance of keeping the ball out. There were 63 minutes played.Goal number three followed quickly when the Blues ruthlessly exploited Burnley giving the ball away. James intercepted, Ziyech moved the ball forward silkily and Werner’s finish was clinical.

Substitute Olivier Giroud had a goal ruled out for offside and Thiago Silva had a header from another Mount corner saved. Had Chelsea found a fourth it would have been no more than the second-half display deserved.

More success at Turf Moor

Today’s win continues the Blues’ strong recent record in this corner of Lancashire. We have now won six of our seven Premier League away games against Burnley and have scored at least twice in each victory. Our last defeat in any competition here was way back in 1983 when we met in what was a battle to avoid relegation from the old Second Division.

Clean sheets keep coming

After all the question marks over Chelsea’s defending earlier in the season, we are now solidity personified at the back. It is now four straight clean sheets in a row in all competitions and we have consecutive away shut-outs in the Premier League for the first time since October 2018.

Edouard Mendy is the first to keep a clean sheet in his first three Premier League appearances for Chelsea since Petr Cech achieved the feat in August 2004.
