Chelsea fought back from two goals down to claim a 2-2 draw against Aston Villa – but it could have been even better had a stoppage-time header from Axel Disasi not been ruled out by VAR.
The Blues went into the interval having conceded twice. Marc Cucurella was unfortunate to divert a John McGinn shot into his own net early in the first half and Morgan Rogers added a second through a well-placed effort from the edge of the box.
Yet Mauricio Pochettino's side reacted impressively in the second period. Noni Madueke started the comeback as he guided a finish into the far corner after good work from Conor Gallagher, who then struck a stunning goal to level the game with ten minutes to play.
It was all Chelsea in the final stages and we appeared to have claimed all three points when Disasi headed home. Yet after an on-field review recommended by VAR, the goal was ruled out for a foul by Benoit Badiashile in the build-up. The points were shared.
A slow start
Pochettino made three changes to the side that was beaten by Arsenal. Trevoh Chalobah and Thiago Silva returned to our defence while Cole Palmer was back in the starting XI having recovered from illness.
The Blues fashioned the first opportunity of the game as a deep free-kick was met by Benoit Badiashile but the French centre-back volleyed well wide. It proved something of a false dawn for our first-half display, however.
From their first attack, Villa broke the deadlock. A surge forward Lucas Digne ended with his cutback finding McGinn, whose shot struck Cucurella and ended in the back of the Blues' net.
Villa came close to a second minutes later as Digne exchanged passes on the edge of the Chelsea box with Ollie Watkins and drilled into the side netting.
Djordje Petrovic then had to be alert to keep out Watkins on the quarter-hour mark. The Villa forward hit a clean strike from inside the penalty area but the Blues stopper held onto it firmly.
Chelsea struggled to break through the Villa backline but we thought we had fashioned a leveller when Gallagher clipped a ball over the hosts' backline for Jackson, who remained composed to finish.
The goal was reviewed by VAR and was ruled out. Jackson was, by a fraction, offside when the pass was played.
Palmer was next to have an attempt but his half volley flew wide. A shot from Moises Caicedo did find the target but was also straight at Emiliano Martinez.
Villa grab a second
The Blues had started to carry a consistent threat and Jackson came inches away from levelling the game as he guided a header toward the corner of Martinez's net. Unfortunately, his effort struck the post and bounced clear.
At the other end, Watkins forced Petrovic into action once again. However, the Chelsea goalkeeper could do little to stop the next opportunity for the hosts.
Morgan Rogers was given too much room to advance and he reversed a shot from 20 yards through the legs of Chalobah and beyond Petrovic. It meant we went into the break two goals behind.
Hitting back
There was renewed focus from Chelsea after the interval and Cucurella was presented with a chance inside the Villa penalty area. He wasn't able to hit the target.
Noni Madueke came close soon after as he cut inside from the right channel and drove a powerful shot wide. Thiago Silva then went close at the back post from a corner; Matty Cash did well to block.
A Chelsea goal finally arrived just after the hour. Gallagher robbed Pau Torres of possession and looked to turn in the box. Although he was brought down, the ball ran for Madueke who produced an excellent finish into the bottom corner.
Momentum was with Chelsea and chances continued to be fashioned. Palmer drove a free-kick wide from a good position after Madueke had been fouled, and the winger then forced substitute Villa goalkeeper Robin Olsen into a reactive stop after good work from Caicedo.
Villa did go close through Moussa Diaby at the other end, but Petrovic was equal to his effort after a swift counterattack.
Chelsea chances continued to come and Palmer dragged a shot wide after a good run from Cucurella. With ten minutes to play, we drew level in style. Gallagher found space 20 yards from goal and produced a spectacular strike that curled beyond a static Olsen.
Could the Blues find a winner? In stoppage time, Palmer nipped past two challenges and was through on goal. Yet Olsen produced a fine reactive save. From the resultant corner, we did have the ball in the net.
Palmer delivered deep and Badiashile nudged Villa centre-back Diego Carlos before he clipped the ball into the six-yard box. There was Disasi, introduced moments earlier, to head home. The travelling Chelsea support erupted.
Then came the VAR check and subsequent on-field review. The decision was that Badiashile had fouled Carlos and the goal should not stand. It meant the contest at Villa Park ended all square.
What it means
Frustration, but another point to our Premier League total. We stay ninth in the top flight, six points behind Manchester United, who occupy a Europa League place.
