Sterling looks to make impact on loan at Wigan

Dujon Sterling is looking to make a similar impression to Reece James at Wigan Athletic after joining the Championship side on a season-long loan, the 19-year-old has told the club’s official website.

Sterling is looking to emulate James, who was Wigan’s player of the year and was also named in the Championship team of the season after his impressive loan spell with the Latics last season.

‘Obviously I saw what Reece James did here last season, so I think Wigan is the right place for me to come and show off my qualities,’ said the youngster.

‘I heard really good things about the gaffer (Paul Cook) and he loves giving young players opportunities. I just want to learn from him and hopefully he can make me a better player.

‘I'm a really attacking wing back and I love to get up and down the pitch. I've got a big engine and I love to chip in with goals and assists, if possible, but I love to defend as well.’

Sterling sees the move as a positive step after playing regularly last season while on loan at League One side Coventry City.

‘Learning about men's football in general was a big thing for me at Coventry last season. It's the real game. In Academy football you're given more time to pass, pass, pass, but when I went to Coventry I had to learn the hard way.

‘I made a few mistakes, but I bounced back to be one of the first names on the team sheet, so I feel like I did something right there.

‘The big stadiums and big crowds, they're things I like about the Championship. It's a great opportunity for me to express myself.’

Mourinho believes ex-loanees can shine for Chelsea

Speaking to Sky Sports, ex-Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has backed the club’s former loan players to make a positive impression this season and provide good solutions for the club in dealing with the FIFA transfer ban.

While the Blues are unable to sign new players this summer, Mourinho believes the club is still in good shape because of the talent we have on our books.

‘It depends on what you have in the academy, that's the point,’ Mourinho said. "I think every manager in the world loves to play kids from the academy.

‘The question is: what is the product from the academy? What can you work with to improve?

‘I think Chelsea is a very special club in relation to that. I just give an example: Chelsea needs a centre-back - Kurt Zouma! You don't need to buy, you don't need to spend. Zouma!

‘He's champion of England, he played for Chelsea, played for Stoke in the Premier League, played for Everton in the Premier League, played for France. He's your player, he's on loan, where are you going to buy a better player than him? You already have him.

‘You want a young striker - Tammy Abraham! He's yours. He knows the club. He was made at the club, he was educated at the club. He was on loan, he played already some matches in the Premier League, he plays in the Championship but Championship at the highest level with the responsibility to play at a big club like Aston Villa. He's ready.

‘Do you need to buy a young centre forward? No! And Chelsea were criticised many times with the number of players they had on loan, more than 30 players, 40 players, but now the moment arrived and they have answers like nobody else could have.

‘They have the answers, so I don't think it's any problem for them. The only problem for them is obvious which is that they lost a phenomenal player. Eden Hazard was a special player for Chelsea and they lost him, apart from that I don't see any problem for them.’

Omeruo set for permanent Leganes switch

According to the Sun, Kenneth Omeruo looks set to leave Chelsea for good with the Blues in talks with Spanish side Leganes on a permanent deal for the Nigerian centre-back.

The 25-year-old, who joined Chelsea from Standard Liege in 2012, spent last season on loan at Leganes and was reportedly keen to settle down at a club after several loan spells during his time with the Blues.

‘Omeruo has a year left on his Stamford Bridge contract and is the longest-serving player at Stamford Bridge,’ stated the paper.

‘He has teams looking to sign him from France and Turkey, where he had spells with Alanyaspor and Kasımpasa earlier in his career.

‘But he wants to stay in Spain with Leganes and is hopeful of a deal getting struck to remain in La Liga.’
