Ampadu impresses as Leipzig beat Spurs
Chelsea loanee Ethan Amadu was praised by the Daily Mail for his impressive performance in defence for RB Leipzig as they recorded a 1-0 away win over Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 match on Wednesday.
The 19-year-old has not seen much playing time for the German club since he joined them on loan from the Blues last summer but with Leipzig hampered by injuries and the suspension of French defender Dayot Upamecano, he was given a start against Spurs and made the most of his opportunity.
‘With injuries piling up and Upamecano suspended, Ampadu was handed his starting chance,’ said the Mail of the Wales international. ‘Back in London, of all places. Against Tottenham, his parent club's rivals, of all opponents. In the Champions League, of all competitions.
‘Frank Lampard was surely watching on in earnest at yet another young player at his future disposal. And if he was, he would have liked what he saw.
‘Ampadu started in the middle of a back three, sitting deepest of all Leipzig's outfield players. On the ball, he was composed, showing the attributes that see him also thrive in defensive midfield.
‘No one on the pitch had more touches, no one played more passes — nearly 100 of them at an almost 95 per cent completion rate. Most short and neat, others into the midfield. The odd drive forward with the ball at his feet.’
Cesc Fabregas also enjoyed Ampadu’s performance as he posted a tweet which took note of his former Chelsea team-mate’s radical new look following the shearing of his familiar dreadlocks.
‘Great seeing Ethan Ampadu starting and playing in such a big game. Good to see him [with] a better haircut as well,’ wrote the Spaniard.
Lazio make offer to Giroud
According to 90min.com, Lazio have reportedly made an offer to Olivier Giroud which would see the striker move to the Serie A side when his Chelsea contract expires at the end of the season.
The French striker was heavily linked with a move to Inter Milan in January but he remained at Stamford Bridge after a move failed to materialise and came off the bench to play for the Blues against Manchester United on Monday.
However, a report in Italy suggests he could still be heading there this summer.
‘Now, the striker could join one of the Nerazzurri's title rivals in Lazio,’ stated the website.
‘According to Le 10 Sport, Giroud has received a 'concrete proposal' from the Rome-based side who are free to negotiate with the player due to the Bosman ruling.
‘The striker is understood to have not yet made a decision on where he would like to move and is likely to be inundated with offers. As well as Inter, Giroud was linked with the likes of LA Galaxy, Newcastle and even Tottenham last month.’
Terry unhappy with VAR
The Daily Star reports John Terry is unhappy with VAR with the former Chelsea captain suggesting on social media the system should be scrapped.
Terry posted his reaction to a suggestion made by Arsene Wenger that VAR should be tweaked so an attacking player would be adjudged to be onside if any part of the body that can score a goal is in line with the last defender, even if other parts of the attacker’s body are in front.
‘Let’s forget about modifying it and just get rid of it!’ he reportedly said on Instagram.
Responding to a comment from a fan, Terry then added: ‘[In] fairness they still can’t get it right after looking at it 10 times.
‘Offside ones I’m happy with and nobody can argue because you’re either on or off, big toe or 1 inch it’s on or off but VAR has to go!
‘Let the ref use the screen to look at it again and let the man on the pitch take control again.’
