To be a Blue means to win, according to captain Millie Bright, who believes that mentality has never been stronger ahead of tonight’s UEFA Champions League clash with Celtic.
The reigning Scottish champions arrive in London to face a Sonia Bompastor side who have won 10 consecutive matches thus far. Seven of those have come in the Women’s Super League - where we sit top - while the other three were in our Group B encounters against Real Madrid, FC Twente and Celtic.
We host Celtic at Stamford Bridge knowing a win, combined with FC Twente dropping points against Real Madrid, would guarantee progression to the quarter-finals.
And the winning mentality instilled in our players, Bright says, has the Blues well-placed to continue such an impressive run.
'For all the seasons I've been here, the mentality has been to win,' Bright told the media in the pre-match press conference. 'It's been to do absolutely everything to win and I think that is something we do extremely well as a team.
'As soon as Sonia came in, if anything, the mentality was even stronger - the standards and the competitiveness. Our two feet are always on the ground. We have so many leaders and our standards are so high day-to-day that we won't allow complacency to even come into our camp.
'We all want to drive to be better players every single day. Even when we win, we're always looking at how we can be better. That's just something within our camp, from the coaches to the players. That's the environment we have.
'We're lucky to have a group of players so willing to do absolutely anything to win. Having that winning mentality is just the DNA of Chelsea, and now it is keep adding that quality and those performances to go along with it.'
In our last Women's Super League encounter before the Celtic clash, the Blues went top of the table thanks to a 2-0 win over Manchester City in SW6. Bright was asked by the journalists if she is hoping her side can replicate the standard of performance in tonight's match.
'It's definitely at the forefront of what we're doing,' our captain replied. 'Our mentality in every single game is to have consistent performances.
'As a Chelsea squad, we have standards. We want to set those every single day in training and then against any opponent we have. Obviously, it was a big performance and a big game, but it's all eyes on the next game and making sure we deliver.'
Like Bompastor, Bright also hailed the impact of having a squad filled with talented players. A number of them have had to bide their time, and our skipper has been left impressed with how they have grasped their chance when it has arrived.
'They've been incredible,' Bright said. 'It's about waiting for your opportunity and then taking it. That's the beauty of our team.
'We have such a talented squad and we know how hard it is to win trophies, and you are going to need everyone at some stage. Credit to the girls because they've all been ready for their opportunity when they've been given it. They've stepped up and delivered.
'But, like Sonia said, we've got a great team dynamic and a good chemistry between everyone. We're all supporting one another regardless of who's on the pitch.'
Bright added: 'We're missing a lot of players through injury and we've done our best to support them in the period they're in now as well, and I hope the girls do feel supported by the rest of the girls.
'It's exciting we've got an extremely talented group, including the injured players. I'm sure Sonia is going to have a couple of headaches when everyone returns! But, again, it's a credit to our environment and the group of people and players we have. Everyone is pretty spectacular.'
