Chelsea’s No.4 was named Player of the Match last night as the Lionesses came from a goal behind to beat Spain 2-1 in the quarter-final of the UEFA Women’s Euros.

Millie Bright played a vital role at the heart of defence and made a goal-line clearance at a pivotal point of the game, when England were 1-0 down.

Speaking on her performance, Bright said: ‘As a defender it’s exciting, you want to be challenged and come up against the best. My job is to keep the ball out of the back of the net. I was gutted that we conceded but it is going to happen against the top teams.

‘I know that my primary job is to defend and get the team in a good place to settle on the ball. I am just ready for the challenges.’

The centre-back was prepared for a tough test against Spain and praised the Lionesses’ character to deal with their threats.

‘You could see the talent of the Spanish team and what they could offer in the game. We knew that we wouldn’t have that much of the ball but there were spells in the game where we did have possession, we created a few chances and I thought that our mentality to stay resilient and ruthless throughout every single minute of the game was unbelievable, that’s what we are about.’

The Lionesses will play their semi-final in Sheffield next Tuesday and Bright discussed the momentum heading into that game.

‘It’s massive, tournament football is about momentum, it is about keeping everyone in a good place. For us, we will keep everyone in our little bubble, nothing changes going into the semis.

‘We will reflect on this performance but I thought that we showed our true character and in parts of the game, we showed our talent on the ball as well. We just have to take the positives out of it and keep the belief.’

It’s been a record-breaking tournament and last night’s game created yet another milestone, with the attendance of 28,994 being the largest ever for a women’s Euros quarter-final.

Bright was full of praise for the fans, adding: ‘The fans were also incredible again, they really do boost you throughout the game. You don’t think about how tired you are, you just think about your next action. The fans mean everything to us so we will keep fighting all the way.’

Three more quarter-finals are to come, with Chelsea players taking part in each of them. This evening Ann-Katrin Berger and Germany take on Austria, while tomorrow Magdalena Eriksson and Zecira Musovic’s Sweden will face Belgium before a battle of the Blues on Saturday when Eve Perisset and Aniek Nouwen face each other as France take on the Netherlands.
