Chelsea captain Millie Bright is looking for one final push after our win over Tottenham moved the Blues top in the Women’s Super League with one game to play.
Maika Hamano's goal in the 37th minute gave us the three points we needed to leapfrog Manchester City into pole position ahead of the final day of the league campaign. We will go into Saturday level on points but with a two-goal advantage on goal difference.
Following the win at Brisbane Road, our skipper has urged the Blues to get the job done when we travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United on Saturday.
‘It’s tight and we know we need to go there Saturday first and foremost get the three points,’ added Bright. ‘Then it goes down to who scores the most goals. City are in the same position – they’ve got to do the exact same. We’ll need to be on our A-game.’
Bright credited Chelsea’s determination to reclaim our WSL title to the mentality that outgoing manager Emma Hayes has engrained in the team during her tenure.
‘It comes down to the mentality and I’ve said it every single year – it is what Emma is the best at,’ said Bright. ‘It is down to the culture and the environment she has created at Chelsea. The mentality that she has is to never settle.
‘Every trophy we have lifted, there have been different journeys and we’ve lived and learned. This one would be a completely different journey as well but for now, we stay absolutely focused because we don’t want to slip up in the final game.’
The final round of fixtures will put WSL in the top-flight spotlight on Saturday, as the men’s Premier League concludes on Sunday – and Bright believes it is what the women’s game deserves.
‘It is getting the recognition and I still believe the WSL is the best league in the women’s game,’ added our defender. ‘It’s the most competitive and I think we’ve seen that from the results.
‘It’s been a very competitive season and I feel like it has run in so quickly, but we have to stay switched on because we’ve got one game left to go.’
