Ahead of our Women's Champions League quarter-final second leg against Ajax next Wednesday, Maren Mjelde has discussed the special atmosphere and memorable moments created on European nights at Stamford Bridge.

It was at the quarter-final stage of last year's competition that Mjelde enjoyed one of her standout moments in Blue. With Lyon ahead in the tie and Chelsea headed out, a spot-kick was awarded in the dying seconds of extra time.

An eight-minute delay then followed while the decision was reviewed by VAR. Mjelde had to keep her composure.

'The only thing I said to myself the whole time was I’m going to score,' she reflects. 'There is no other option, I’m going to score. I kept telling myself that for eight minutes before I was allowed to take it.

Mjelde's penalty was nerveless. Her celebrations were unbridled. 'I put it in the top corner – I didn’t mean to do that really. I wanted to kick it hard and it ended up being a really good penalty.'

'I think I just lost it in the moment and was suddenly running a lap,' she says. 'I can still hear the roar, the cheering from the fans, that was just amazing. The fans gave me that extra motivation.'

Chelsea went on to win that last-eight encounter on penalties. Such a scenario will hopefully not be required next week when Emma Hayes's side return to Stamford Bridge for the second leg of their quarter-final against Ajax.

The Blues have opened up a three-goal advantage after an impressive display in Amsterdam. But the job must be completed on home soil and Mjelde highlights the important role supporters will play on Wednesday evening.

'The extra support gives us an advantage against the top teams in Europe,' says the Norway international. '[It was a] good crowd that night against Lyon but I am pretty sure we can get even bigger crowds.'

The quarter-final second leg against Ajax at Stamford Bridge takes place on Wednesday, 27 March. Kick-off is at 8pm – and you can purchase your tickets here.
