Chelsea fans have started to see the best of Moises Caicedo this year. The midfielder finished his first season at the club in fine form and he has continued where he left off this time around, playing a pivotal role in our impressive start to the new campaign.

By Caicedo’s own admission, it was not plain sailing when he first arrived from Brighton last summer. Step by step, though, the Ecuadorian international has shown his ability, delivering for the Blues week after week. It is clear why the club were so determined to secure Caicedo’s services.

The 22-year-old has been reflecting on his journey at Chelsea so far, and the progress he knows he has made. It has been a pleasure to watch.

‘At the beginning of last season it was a little bit tough for me,’ admitted Caicedo. ‘It’s a very big club and you have to get used to it. I learned a lot.

'When someone new comes in with new ways, you need to adapt: to a new club and playing with the impression that you need to win every game.

‘Now I am more adapted to the club, with the new training staff, which is good. I have more confidence and I’m playing good football. My team-mates also have helped me a lot on and off the pitch. I’m really enjoying it.

‘As I said when I arrived here, I would like to become a legend here and that’s what I’m working hard to do every day. That’s the target.’

Caicedo says the Blues’ current good form is ‘what we’ve been waiting for’ and he is happy to be playing his part. He wants and expects Chelsea to finish in the top four this season. A good deal of our recent collective success, Caicedo says, and his own form, is down to the work done by Enzo Maresca.

‘All the players are enjoying it because he is a very good manager,’ said Caicedo.

‘He has given me responsibility. It’s good when the manager does that because he knows you can do it well. He always tells me to help the team attacking and defending, and that’s what I’m doing on the pitch.

‘He likes when we have the ball. I try to keep the ball. Every game I try to do assists or make good passes to create chances. I am working on both sides helping to get forwards and backwards, and I’m so happy when I help the team to win games.’

Maresca has also entrusted Caicedo with the captaincy on a couple of occasions this season: at home to Servette and away at Bournemouth.

‘It means a lot for me,’ smiled Caicedo.

‘I’m so proud of myself. It’s a dream to be a captain of one of the best teams in the world. I am so grateful to him for that because without him that would have been impossible.

‘It’s a dream come true because I grew up supporting Chelsea. To be a player for Chelsea and for some games to be the captain is so good for me.’

A long-time affiliation to the club has ingrained in Caicedo what is never far from the front of people’s minds: winning silverware. It has been a little while now since the Blues have done that. Caicedo is determined to put that right.

‘Chelsea is a team that likes to win trophies,’ he stressed. ‘All the players want to win everything here.

‘We can do special things over the next few years. We have a very good team: the squad, the manager, the staff.

‘I just want to help the team in any way I can. I am so happy when I help to win games. I would like to win trophies this season also. That’s always on my mind. Our target is to win trophies here.’

With Caicedo at the heart of this Chelsea team, there is every chance of that happening sooner rather than later.
