Blues keeper Zecira Musovic spoke to us after Sweden’s 1-0 victory over Belgium last night.
Sweden secured a last-minute winner in injury time at Leigh Sports Village, dashing Belgium’s hopes of progressing to the European Championship semi-finals. Defender Linda Sembrant scored at the end of a hard-fought clash, booking a semi-final showdown against England next Tuesday.
Speaking at full-time about the win, Musovic said: ‘It was a tough game but such a huge win for the team.
‘It feels amazing. It was a tough game against a good Belgium side. We fought hard for it and we got the win at the end. I mean, who doesn’t love a last-minute winning goal?’
Sweden came into the tournament ranked highest among their competitors and after drawing against Netherlands, went on to secure victories against Switzerland and Portugal in the group stage, with their win against Belgium securing them a spot in the semi-final at Bramall Lane. Musovic discussed how she felt ahead of meeting the Lionesses next week and what she expects from the tournament's home country.
‘I’m really excited for the game against England. They have played some really good football and have awakened football throughout England. I’m hoping for a massive game, a lot of fans and good play from both teams.
‘I’m expecting a really good opponent that will be well prepared with a lot of confidence. They have amazing players, not least from our Chelsea team!’
The Swedish goalkeeper is no stranger to playing in England, a second home to her since signing joining Chelsea at the start of 2021. Musovic highlighted her Euros experience so far and was quick to heap praise on the tournament hosts and the supporters from both home and away that have come out in their thousands to watch.
‘So far it has been truly amazing. The supporters have been unbelievable and everything both on and off the pitch has met my expectations.
‘Football without our supporters is nothing. They give us that extra push, the motivation to go again and turn that dream into a reality.’
She looked forward to a ‘party on the bus, singing to the radio’ to celebrate the win on the way back to the team hotel but was quick to add ‘we then recover, and we go again!’
The last spot for the semi-finals is up for grabs tonight with France up against Netherlands at 8pm (UK time) at the New York Stadium in Rotherham. A win from either side will see Chelsea impressively have a player in every semi-finalist team, which guarantees a Blues player in the winning UEFA Euro 2022 team!
