The latest member of the squad to share their first experience of watching matches in the stands is Carney Chukwuemeka, who recalls how family trips to watch his local club had him dreaming of reaching League Two as a player one day...
It was Northampton versus Barnet. I was about four or five, my brother was seven, and I remember us going with my dad and mum, because it was about 10 minutes from our old house. That was my first real experience of watching a game live and I remember that the atmosphere was crazy and stuff. That’s kind of how I just started falling in love with football as well.
It was definitely the atmosphere I noticed most. Just hearing the noise, imagining how the players must feel playing in that atmosphere, that was the first thing that kind of entangled me.
We went to games quite a lot because Northampton wasn’t far, so quite often, whenever we got the chance to. After our Sunday League match or Saturday match, we’d just go straight there. I would compare what I’d done in my game to what I was watching quite a lot actually. You just think at that age, where you’re going to be. To be fair you’re just enjoying football at that age, but at the same time you’re thinking 'am I going to play like him when I’m older?'.
It's so surreal when I look back to thinking that at Northampton, and now I’ve played in the Premier League with Chelsea and Aston Villa. Every time when I get a moment at home and I’m not doing anything, I always just think back about my journey. Obviously I’m still at a young age, it’s just crazy how quick and fast things have happened. I’m just grateful really.
