Nathalie Bjorn insists Chelsea need to show Man City what it's like to play at Stamford Bridge and spoke about the role the fans can play in helping to turn the Champions League quarter-final around.
Bjorn was in confident mood ahead of our Champions League quarter-final second leg against Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Thursday evening, despite us suffering a 2-0 defeat in the first leg last Thursday.
The two teams clashed at the Etihad again on Sunday, with the Blues sealing a last-minute win thanks to Erin Cuthbert's stoppage time header.
That victory has set the scene for what looks to be another fascinating battle between the sides.
'I think when Erin scored that goal, everything just went…' Bjorn revealed. 'You know when you’re so happy that you just lose track of time and place and everything?
'It was pure happiness and I think that really showed a strength in us to turn the game around. I think we played really well and I know that we’re going to use that coming into the game on Thursday.
'It was really important. I think we played really well, especially second half but winning and that late goal was something different.
'I think that power and resilience gives us the confidence that we need to go into the game on Thursday. We know that it’s going to be a really tough game, we know that we have to win and score at least two goals.
'Of course, these are the games we love to play, with pressure, especially at home, so I really think the last performance against City really helped us in aiming for that goal.'
Bjorn joined Chelsea from Everton in January 2024 and has already lifted two trophies. She discussed what makes the club so successful.
She said: 'There is so much with this club. Of course it’s the people and the players and staff who have been here before me, before us and paved the way. It’s the whole organisation.
'You need to have a club behind you if you want to have a successful women’s team. There's people behind the curtain that you might not see have done so much for the club.
'Everyone who works around us are top quality people who are really good at their jobs, which makes it easier to perform on the pitch.'
Chelsea have work to do in overturning a 2-0 deficit from the first leg, but the team have a plan.
'I think we need to come into the game with the right intentions and we need to have a good start,' Bjorn said.
'We know it’s 90 minutes but we need to score goals and we need not to concede any goals and of course it’s a balance between going forward but still not concede anything.
'So I think we need to go in and attack the game really offensively from the beginning and let City feel what it’s like to play at Stamford Bridge.'
Playing at the Bridge allows even more of the Chelsea faithful to get behind the team, and Bjorn stressed how important that support is to the players.
She said: 'The atmosphere is always amazing at the Bridge. Just the noise, the ocean of blue, it’s just a different feeling.
'Of course, the more fans, the better. They are always loud and always cheering us on and I mean, just walking out of the tunnel right before kick off and seeing how many people are there is like a dream.
'That’s part of why you do this, because it’s just an amazing feeling and one that I don’t think people would understand unless they have been in that situation.
'It’s a beautiful stadium, the pitch is perfect and just the atmosphere it creates is amazing.'
Finally, the defender spoke with confidence about Chelsea's chances in the second leg.
'We can 100% turn it around,' she stated. 'I have such a big belief in this team, we have a squad with so many fantastic football players. We need to be brave on Thursday and I know that we can do it.'
