Chelsea FC Women’s Niamh Charles is excited to get back into Barclays FA Women’s Super League action as the Blues prepare to face West Ham United this evening.
It is our first league game since 11 February and our No.21 is raring to get back to playing league football.
‘It does feel like a long time since we’ve actually played a WSL game and all the teams around us have been playing games. It’s nice to finally get a league game and to get back into the swing of games week in, week out for the league and start picking up the points,’ Charles said.
This evening’s encounter against the Irons will be our third this calendar year, having played Olli Harder’s side twice in January.
‘The last couple of games they’ve given us a good test, they definitely have a distinct way of playing and they’re a very tough team to play against. We’ve got to definitely be on it tonight and we’ll be expecting a good game.
‘They’re very aggressive, one vs ones everywhere so I’ll expect that from them. All over the pitch I expect them to be very fit and try to take the game to us as much as we take it to them, so it’ll be a tough test.’
The Blues are on a relentless run of fixtures this month with tonight’s our second of seven scheduled games for us in the month of March. Our first game of the month saw us slip to defeat against Manchester City in the Continental Tyres League Cup on Saturday, however Charles is pleased that the Blues have an opportunity to put things right.
‘That comes with playing football at the highest level, there’s always the next game around the corner which is brilliant after a defeat. It means we can’t dwell on it too long, you have to get back up on the training pitch and you’ve got the next game to focus on which is really good.
‘It’s also great that we have an opportunity to put things right that we’ve learned from over the weekend and kick back on again.'
Our No.21 also revealed she enjoys a packed fixture list, adding: ‘That’s why we train every day and that’s why, at the start of the season and pre-season we train so much so that when the games come thick and fast you’re ready and you’re prepared for it and that’s why we all train so hard, it is to play. To have as many games as possible, it’s the best thing.’
The Blues’ fans have travelled up and down the country to support the team this year, something that hasn’t gone unnoticed from the players.‘The fans this year have been incredible,’ Charles said.
‘Last year we missed them and this year I think each game I’ve gone to I’ve really, really noticed how good our fans have been compared to the team we’ve been playing. Just in general, the volume of the support, the amount of numbers that travel is incredible and all the players really appreciate it.’
This evening’s game against the Irons kicks off at 7.45pm (UK time) and will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Football, with coverage starting from 7:30pm.
