There could only be one winner last night as Ève Périsset’s France took on Aniek Nouwen’s Netherlands in the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 quarter-finals at the New York Stadium in Rotherham. One Blue would end the night one step from Wembley while the other would be left facing the prospect of going home.

After a goalless 90 minutes, it was France who were to win the tie when Chelsea’s Périsset netted the winning goal from the penalty spot in the first half of extra-time after VAR had adjudged that Kadidiatou Diani had been fouled in the box.

As the final whistle sounded, it was elation for the Blues’ summer signing, while new club team-mate Nouwen was left dejected. The Dutch defender spoke to the media after the match and said that after a few days of reflection, she will be ready to challenge for her next trophy with Chelsea.

‘Right now, I don’t know what I am feeling, it is very raw,’ Nouwen said.

‘I think we had some good moments but we didn’t make enough of those opportunities. I don’t think we had enough depth in our play.

‘I’m expecting to have a few days off before going back to Chelsea. It is just about picking yourself up and going again. The challenge for the next trophy or tournament isn’t far away.’

Looking back on her experiences at the tournament, Nouwen stated that she has enjoyed her time at the Euros and that it has been made all the more special by the sea of orange which has been continually present in the stands.

She said ‘The COVID-19 outbreak (in the group stage) made things difficult for us but it is a big tournament and you always have to enjoy those moments.

‘We have amazing fans that are always here making a lot of noise and it really helps us. It is amazing what they are doing.’

All eyes now turn to the semi-finals, with Chelsea players present in all four of the teams remaining in the tournament. Fans can keep up-to-date with their progress on our social media channels ‘@ChelseaFCW’.
