With his coolly taken spot-kick against AC Milan on Tuesday, Jorginho joined Eden Hazard as Chelsea’s second-most successful penalty-taker of all time.

The Italy international marked his 200th appearance for the Blues in style as he kept his nerve to send Ciprian Tatarusana the wrong way after 21 minutes to give us the lead at the San Siro with his 26th goal in 30 penalty attempts as a Chelsea player.

It put him level with Hazard on Chelsea’s list of penalty aces with a slightly better success rate than the Belgian who netted his 26 in 31 opportunities. However, Jorginho still has some way to go to match the club record of 49 set by Frank Lampard.

Here are some other interesting facts about our No5’s spot-kick strikes for the Blues over the past five years.

Opening day specialist

Jorginho has regularly helped the Blues make winning starts to the new season with successful penalties in three of our last five Premier League openers. He netted on his debut in a 3-0 win at Huddersfield Town in 2018/19, opened the scoring in our 3-1 victory at Brighton in 2020/21 and notched the only goal when we beat Everton at Goodison Park at the start of this season.

Hopping to success

The bunny-hop run-up which he utilised in our 2-0 win at AC Milan has become synonymous with the Italian midfielder who has sent the goalkeeper the wrong way on 23 of his 30 penalty attempts for the Blues. However, he has varied things up from time to time to get the better of goalkeepers, beating Hugo Lloris with a powerful effort in a 1-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur in February 2021 and Emiliano Martinez with precise placement when we won 3-1 at Aston Villa last December.

Doubling up from the spot

Jorginho’s successful penalties have come in 21 games with the Italian netting braces on no fewer than five occasions. He slotted twice past Andre Onana in a 4-4 draw with Ajax in November 2019, repeated the trick against Vicente Guaita in our 4-0 win over Crystal Palace in October 2020 and did it three times last season against Malmo, Leeds United and Aston Villa.

Coolness under pressure

The match at the San Siro marked the seventh time that Jorginho had opened the scoring for Chelsea in a game with a penalty. However, he has been just as cool under pressure late in matches, most notably with a stoppage-time winner when we beat Leeds 3-2 at the Bridge last December.
