After a pulsating FA Cup quarter-final swung in Chelsea’s favour and secured our spot at Wembley next month, the victory has Malo Gusto dreaming of going all the way and lifting the famous old trophy to cap off a successful first season at the club.
The French international has been a revelation at right-back for Chelsea and shone once again as we saw off the threat of Leicester City in a thrilling cup tie at Stamford Bridge, as Carney Chukwuemeka and Noni Madueke both came off the bench to net in injury time to secure a 4-2 win.
That came after the Foxes had come from two goals down – Chelsea goals scored by Marc Cucurella and Cole Palmer in the first half – after the break to draw level, before being reduced to 10 men ahead of the late, late show from Carney and Noni.
Amongst the chaos of the end-to-end action was the calm, cultured brilliance of Gusto at right-back who offered up his thoughts post-match and expressed his delight at moving to within two victories of lifting silverware.
‘It was an incredible game with a lot of action,’ said Malo when reflecting on our FA Cup victory.
‘We are of course very happy to get the win and to have the opportunity to play once again at Wembley. It’s very important for us and we are all very happy.
‘I thought in the first half we were very good. We created a lot of chances and we looked very good both offensively and defensively.
‘Even though we were winning 2-0, we knew it was not finished because Leicester are a good side and can cause you dangers.
‘They got back into the game with two quick goals and we knew that we had to remain together and to keep pushing. Thankfully, we did that and got the goals at the end to get the win.’
It was another stunning display from the French international, with the right-back named Player of the Match by host broadcaster BBC - and Malo is pleased to be playing his part for the side.
While delighted with his recent performances, Malo was quick to point out other strong showings – in particular Cole Palmer and the impact of goalscoring substitutes Carney Chukwuemeka and Noni Madueke - as he highlighted the need for the entire squad to play their part in any Chelsea success.
‘I’m very happy with my performances recently,’ added our No.27. ‘I try my best to help the team as much as possible in every game and I’m pleased to be performing well for Chelsea.
‘Of course, Cole is a great player. He is doing well too and I’m very happy for him to score and assist. He is an important player for us.
‘Also, I want to show credit to Carney and Noni. They are two very good players and they deserved their moments when they came on, they both scored great goals and they played important roles for us.
‘Like I said, we all need to play our parts for the team whether that is starting or from the bench and we are all very happy.’
The victory ensures another visit to Wembley for the Blues this season as we prepare to face Manchester City at the semi-final stage of the competition next month, with Gusto hoping we can go all the way and lift the FA Cup to mark a successful first season for him in Chelsea blue.
‘The FA Cup is very important for the club and this is another step towards success, we hope,’ said Malo.
‘Everyone knows how big the FA Cup is in England, it’s an important trophy and we know we have to keep pushing in every game to try and win this trophy.’
