The headline act saw Sam Kerr net four goals on the night, while Pernille Harder bagged a hat-trick and Katerina Svitkova chipped in with her first goal for the club off the bench as the Blues cruised to top spot in Group A.

Squad rotation was required once again with seven changes to the side who overcame Brighton & Hove Albion in our previous outing. Kerr and Harder were among those changes and their freshness in front of goal resulted in two formidable individual displays.

Reflecting on a resounding victory which sees us take maximum points from our opening two games in the group, Green explained how the instructions to the team were to come out of the blocks quickly and praised a near-perfect showing.

‘I thought it was a great performance,' he said afterwards. 'We asked them to try and have a fast start and I felt we really did that. We really took the game to Vllaznia in the early stages and pushed for that early goal which we got.

'I felt our patience and our ball speed across the pitch was really good. We knew it would be difficult to break down the low block but I felt we did it perfectly and got some great goals.

‘Sam getting four goals, you say, I haven’t seen that goal back - it may have been Magda’s. If you’re saying it was Sam’s then for her to get four in a Champions League game, Pernille to get three and Katerina chipping in with her first goal for the club, it couldn’t have gone any better really.’

On the subject of Kerr’s confirmed four goals, Green believes this will prove a huge psychological boost for the striker and will give her confidence going into the forthcoming matches, starting with Aston Villa in the Women’s Super League on Sunday.

‘Sam’s a born goal scorer,' added Green. 'She’s won the Golden Boot the last two years and we never had any doubts she would score goals again this season, that’s what she’s made a career on.

'Getting four tonight is going to give her a lot of confidence which hopefully she can take into the weekend and get on the scoresheet again. There has never been a doubt that she scores goals. You look at her record across her career and we haven’t been worried about that at all.’

It's not just the goalscorers who were in for praise as Green was quick to commend the creators too. Guro Reiten added significantly to her assist tally for the season while Niamh Charles looked dangerous on the left side, helping Kerr and Harder to do what they do best.

‘Guro provides assists, she’s the assist queen as she’s known in the league,' he said. 'She’s an excellent player, she’s got a wand of a left foot and she showed that tonight as she does most weeks. She’s a very important player for us and gives us that quality down the left-hand side, linking up with Pernille and Niamh tonight. All three of them were hard to handle with their movement and interchanging of positions.

‘The movement and interchanging of position made it difficult for Vllaznia to deal with on that side. They were pulled apart quite a lot on that side of the pitch. I thought the combinations worked really well and we got some goals through that in the first half. They’re all quality players, the more they play together and get used to each other, those combinations are only going to get better.’

There was a real emphasis to build on our victory over Paris Saint-Germain on matchday one and scoring eight goals without reply met the brief. Green acknowledged that we are in a good position, however he stressed the need to remain level-headed with four more games still to navigate.

‘It was always going to be important to follow up last week’s great result in Paris,' he added. 'We needed to follow that up which I think we’ve done very convincingly tonight. It puts us in a good position in the group to be top of it but we’ve still got a long way to go because we’re only at matchday two.

‘We go again in November when we face back-to-back games against Real Madrid. We’ve put ourselves in a good position but there is a lot of work still to be done to ensure we get through to the latter stages.’
