It was quite the night for Pedro Neto at Stamford Bridge yesterday evening, with the winger sparking a stunning Chelsea victory by grabbing both a goal and an assist in the same game for the first time in the Premier League.

The Portugal international is predominately known as a flying winger, however it was through the middle where he did his damage against a Southampton side who struggled to contain him as we ran out comfortable 4-0 winners.

Christopher Nkunku had already given us the lead with his first home goal of the season before the Frenchman found Neto’s fine run with a reverse pass, allowing Pedro to hammer the ball beyond Saints stopper Aaron Ramsdale.

After the break, the former Wolves man delivered an inch-perfect cross from a free-kick that was just begging Levi Colwill to head home. The Cobham graduate got the memo, plundering the ball beyond Ramsdale’s reach.

Neto’s evening's work had already ended before Marc Cucurella scored our fourth – and final – goal of the night, sweeping home after being picked out by the man who replaced our No.7, Tyrique George.

So, what did our winger – or should that be central striker – make of the much needed three points?

‘It was a really important win for us,’ Pedro beamed when speaking post-match.

‘We know that we have been in a difficult moment in recent weeks but this is part of the process. We know we must be able to overcome tough times and I think that’s why this win is so important for us.

‘We are very happy to get the three points in the way that we did against Southampton and hopefully we can build on this now.’

Playing through the middle with Nkunku and Cole Palmer behind him is something that Enzo Maresca tried at Aston Villa, with the head coach again utilising this approach albeit with the addition of Jadon Sancho off the flank.

It’s a role that is fairly new to Pedro but not something he is alien to and the forward admits he is happy to feature wherever he is required, as long as he is helping the side.

‘I enjoy the role I’m playing through the middle, it’s good because I don’t have to run back as much!’ Pedro joked.

‘Wherever the manager needs me, I’m happy to do my best for the team. Playing further forward and centrally means I have more energy for running forward and trying to get behind the defence with my pace.

‘It’s good for me because it’s almost like I have a free role. I can receive the ball into feet, or I can go in behind, so it gives us options.

‘I’m really enjoying the role but like I said, I’m happy to play wherever is needed and as long as I’m helping the team, that’s the most important thing.

‘I was pleased to get a goal and to assist Levi [Colwill]. It’s something I want to do more with my game and being calm in front of goal is something I want to add, and I will keep working hard to improve on that.’

The games are coming thick and fast for the Blues, with a trip to Denmark next on the agenda as we take on Copenhagen in the Conference League.

The first leg of our knockout clash gets underway next Thursday (6 March) in the Danish capital and Pedro hopes we can take this performance into our European competition as we look to take a step closer to winning silverware.

‘We are looking forward to the next game, of course,’ he added.

‘All the competitions we play in are very important for us and our focus now is on the next game, which is Copenhagen in the Conference League.

‘We want to win titles, it’s what we are at a club like Chelsea for, and we are going to give it everything in every competition we enter.’
