Jimmy-Jay Morgan, Leo Castledine and Donnell McNeilly gave us a largely comfortable win at Kingsmeadow against West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League 2 this evening.

Mark Robinson’s men bounced back in style to ensure our Under-21s will head into the international break with their first win in two Premier League 2 games under their belt.

Jimmy-Jay Morgan and Leo Castledine got themselves on the scoresheet with a smart finish and a well-hit free-kick respectively to give us a two-goal lead.

There were other chances in the game for our Blues to extend the lead, as Ronnie Stutter and Diego Moreira tested the keeper on separate occasions.

Donnell McNeilly added a third to our tally late on as he impressed in a late cameo.

Eddie Beach also pulled off a fine save to keep out Ruben Shakpoke’s penalty early on in the first half. Nevertheless, we were victorious without really being threatened from the visitors, securing three points which take us to two wins in the PL2 this season.

Breaking the deadlock

It was a lively start from both teams but neither had spells of sustained pressure in the first 20 minutes. There were half-chances as we got ourselves into good areas, without giving the keeper anything to do.

But, 22 minutes into the game, the young Baggies were awarded a dubious penalty as Alex Matos was punished for a handball he seemed to know nothing about. Shakpoke stepped up to take the penalty, but Beach saved comfortably, parrying the ball away from danger.

We broke the deadlock of a match that had lacked chances to that point and it was a fine move which resulted in Castledine timing a good pass into the path of Morgan, who dispatched expertly.

Racing clear

We made it two soon after as Castledine converted from a free-kick which goalkeeper Ronnie Hollingshead will be disappointed about letting in. Moreira almost made it three when his half-volley was saved excellently by the left boot of Hollingshead.

We remained in control for much of the game as the second period saw Williams and Stutter go close on two separate occasions.

There was still time for a third as a touch and finish inside the penalty area from second-half substitute Donnell McNeilly made it 3-0.

It was the accomplished performance and scoreline our Under-21s needed after two PL2 losses on the bounce.

What comes next?
