Mauricio Pochettino ended his return to former club Tottenham Hotspur with a smile on his face, believing the way his side put our in-form opponents under pressure and forced them into errors made us fully deserving of our 4-1 derby victory.
On a manic, breathless and ultimately victorious return to his former club Tottenham, Mauricio Pochettino saw his Chelsea side come back from conceding an early goal to triumph 4-1 by the final whistle of this feisty derby in north London.
That tells just part of the story, with two red cards and five disallowed goals along the way, as Cole Palmer pulled us level from the penalty spot in the first half before Nicolas Jackson scored three times after the break for his first hat-trick with the club.
However, despite everything that went on during a dramatic evening in north London, Pochettino felt that we were ultimately worthy winners, once we'd put a shaky start behind us.
'I think we deserved to win,' said Pochettino after the match. 'We forced them to make too many mistakes. Tottenham was better in the first 15 minutes and then I think we bossed the game, our performance was good and forced them into making mistakes. If you look at everything you could see during the game, I think it was fair.
'That’s why overall I think the performance was good, because we arrived in a different moment from Tottenham. They were top of the table and winning and playing very well, full of confidence. For us it was to come here to play the leader in the best situation we can. This performance showed that we were really good and I have nothing to say more than that.
'In the end we got what we wanted, we won 4-1. We can look and analyse and talk, but for us we are just happy with the three points. We have played really well from the start of the season, deserved more, but in the end it is about winning points.
'It was important to come here to Tottenham and win the game against a team playing really well. It could be an important three points for us, to help us now start to push up the table.'
Our head coach feels the way we controlled the emotion of a fierce derby was important…
‘Yes, that was important, to control the emotion. In this type of game, if you control the emotion you can win. It’s 90 minutes, or 110 minutes today, but yes, it’s really important to control the emotion and manage.
‘The game is long and, in the end, we deserved to win and that is important. We forced them to make mistakes – a second yellow card or a penalty, the team was great, and we need to congratulate all the players.’
Pochettino was pleased to see Jackson get his first hat-trick…
‘I am happy for him because we know that when strikers don’t score, they suffer. So that is for people to think. He is really young, arrived to the club this summer, and it’s not easy to play for Chelsea. It’s the history, about winning, lifting trophies.
‘That’s why as a coaching staff we need to provide the tools and be calm with the way we assess things. The confidence is there and I am so happy for him because he deserves the boost.’
Mauricio also responded to the total of 21 minutes of added time in the game due to numerous VAR reviews…
‘It’s really tough – 20 minutes more is crazy. We need to review a little bit but that is to have clear ideas in how we can be better. I think it’s now about being clever and putting everything into recovering the players. Sunday is another game against Man City and yes, now is not only about training, but also about recovering the players and deciding the expectation for that.’
