Mauricio Pochettino revealed that Robert Sanchez is available for selection again following injury but Thiago Silva and Carney Chukwuemeka will both miss tomorrow's match against Manchester City.
There was plenty for Mauricio Pochettino to talk about before tomorrow afternoon's Premier League fixture away at Manchester City and our head coach began with an update on the injury situation in his squad.
Unfortunately Thiago Silva is out of action and there has been a setback for Carney Chukweumeka, but defenders Levi Colwill and Malo Gusto are both okay following knocks in our 3-1 win over Crystal Palace last time out.
'It’s a minor injury for Thiago but I think he’s out for tomorrow and is not available,' explained Pochettino. 'After this game we don’t know, we will need to assess him day by day.
'Carney suffered a twisted ankle two days ago and he’s out, but Levi and Malo are okay. They recovered well and they are available for tomorrow.'
There was big news on the potential return of goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, who is now available again for the first time since the trip to Everton in December, although Mauricio was keeping his cards close to his chest on whether the Spaniard will come straight back into the team, given Djordje Petrovic's good form between the posts during Sanchez's absence.
'Robert is available too, which is good news. Always it’s good to recover a player that was playing a lot. For him to be available again is a good thing for the team.
'We will see if he plays tomorrow. It’s very good to have him back and you never know in football what can happen. It’s better to have all the players available as soon as possible and be ready to play if we decide to choose them.'
Our trip to the Etihad Stadium will also see Cole Palmer return to his former home for the first time, having spent his entire career with Manchester City before moving to Chelsea in August.
However, Pochettino doesn't believe he will go there with a point to prove and is confident his mentality will prevent him from feeling any additional pressure due to the emotions around this game.
'He’s not this type of player who needs to prove anything. He’s very grateful for his period at Manchester City and he left the club because he wanted to find another challenge or have the possibility to play more.
'He’s adapted very well and he’s lucky because he’s playing a lot of games here. He’s going to be there trying to play and perform for himself and for his team.
'He is like a South American in the way he has the capacity to adapt so quick. Sometimes maybe people here in England move from the north to the south and find it difficult to adapt and suffer. He arrived at the club and I think that was the key, he adapted very quickly to life here in Cobham and London and the club. That allowed him to show his talent.
'There is a word in Spanish which describes him but I don’t know how to explain it in English. It’s between smart, clever, naughty. He’s so emotionally intelligent and he’s going to go there and play. He could play good or not so good, but it won’t be because of the pressure.'
Pochettino went on to hint that we could see more of another young member of his Chelsea squad in the near future. Cesare Casadei returned from his loan at Leicester City in January and made his Blues debut at Liverpool, with our head coach explaining the decision for the Italian to return and what part he could play in the second half of the season.
'It was a tough decision because he was playing at Leicester and we didn’t want to cut his development, but with the injuries for Romeo Lavia, Lesley Ugochukwu and Carney Chukwuemeka we felt we needed another midfielder. In the squad it is only Enzo, Moi and Conor and not another real midfielder.
'We spoke with him, we explained the situation, that maybe we will use him or not, and it was his decision to come back. He was so keen to come back to Chelsea to help us in any way, that is why we took the decision together to make him again a part of the squad.
'We played some FA Cup and Carabao Cup games in this period and he wasn’t available because he already played in them for Leicester, which was bad luck for him and for us, but now he is going to be involved in the Premier League games.'
