Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s trip to Burnley in the Premier League, Mauricio Pochettino revealed that three members of his squad have returned to full training this week, but is keeping his cards close to his chest on who will start up front at Turf Moor tomorrow.
In the build-up to our trip to Turf Moor in the Premier League, he began by discussing the fitness of Mykhailo Mudryk and Moises Caicedo, after both players impressed when we made it back-to-back wins with a 2-0 victory at neighbours Fulham on Monday evening.
Mudryk netted his first Chelsea goal in that match, in a move started by a raking cross-field pass from Caicedo, before both players were substituted with knocks during the game. However, Pochettino confirmed both will be available for selection tomorrow, as could Carney Chukwuemeka, who hasn't featured since scoring on our visit to West Ham United.
'They are both in the squad and then we will decide if they can be available to play from the start or not,' said Pochettino on Mudryk and Caicedo.
'Of course Misha is improving like all the players. Always it’s about time, it’s about special circumstances. Every single player has their own special circumstances and we need to understand those circumstances.
'In three months we’ve tried. There are a lot of young players who joined the squad to train. It’s a big job to try to understand everyone and after to try to apply the things that we believe can help. To help them to perform and then improve to adapt to the quality.
'For Moises it’s about time because he’s a player you already know can perform in the Premier League. But after no pre-season and the situation of not being involved in the last few months, it’s normal he needs time to settle at a new club. Even if you are happy and everything is perfect, always it’s difficult to settle. It’s normal given the situation that happened with him this summer that now he is like in pre-season.
'We are happy because he was really good against Fulham, to keep the momentum. Now he is going on international duty to play and travel to South America which is always difficult and definitely doesn’t help the situation, but we need to accept and try to help him to perform again when he comes back.
'Carney was close to joining us last week. This week he was training well but I still haven’t decided because I need to check now with the medical staff after training today. We started training a little bit later so I haven’t been able to check yet, but we need to assess all the players and they are doing that now. We will see after that if we can count on him.'
There was also promising news on Reece James, who is close to a return and will be available for selection once he has served his one-game suspension tomorrow, but it is still too soon to think about Ben Chilwell or Romeo Lavia recovering from their injuries.
'Reece was training with the group. It’s a shame that he’s suspended and he is banned for tomorrow,' added Pochettino. 'We are really happy with the way that he is recovering after his injury and he’s doing well. He is available so after the international break when his suspension is over he will have the possibility of being involved.
'It’s difficult to say when Chilly will be back. I am not a doctor so I cannot answer. We need to judge day by day and we cannot say the period that he is going to be out. Romeo still is not running, so I cannot tell you. After the international break he is still not going to be ready.'
One area our head coach does have options returning is in attack, though, where Nicolas Jackson has now served his suspension and is available to play at Burnley tomorrow, although he faces competition from Armando Broja, after the Albanian international marked his first start following a lengthy injury absence with a goal at Fulham.
Pochettino confirmed he has already decided which of the pair will get the nod to lead the Chelsea attack at Turf Moor, but is keeping it to himself for now, even if he admits he has been pleased with Broja's progress.
'We took the decision, they know. We’ve already made the decision and you will see tomorrow.
'We know from the three months we have worked here that Armando has amazing potential. We knew before, but when work with a player you start to feel a player in training sessions and you can see the potential.
'Now it’s about how he recovers from his big injury and the long period he was out. He’s a very talented player, we trust in him, that’s why he played against Fulham and maybe tomorrow. Now he needs time because he needs to feel complete recovery. Not in his body, it is in his mind also. It was a problem with his knee, but sometimes it also affects your mind.
'His mood is very good, he is working really hard and I hope that he can improve in the next few weeks and that he can be the player that we trust.'
