Mauricio Pochettino expects to see a strong reaction from Robert Sanchez when Chelsea host Brentford today, a week after the Spaniard’s error against Arsenal.
It was Sanchez’s misplaced pass that kickstarted the Gunners comeback at Stamford Bridge last Saturday, but Pochettino has explained why he is confident it will have no bearing on the keeper’s confidence in possession when we take on the Bees.
‘We are there to help, and we are helping him,’ affirmed Pochettino.
‘He is very relaxed. He is calm. He is very good. We know football is about mistakes. The whole team is responsible, and we the coaching staff first because we relay the idea how we want to play. To blame someone is to blame us, to blame myself, but not him because he is delivering what we want.
‘You can miss a penalty, you can miss a pass, that’s football. He has shown great character and personality and for sure today he is going to be great.’
One player who has been great in recent weeks is Conor Gallagher. The midfielder has often worn the armband this season in the absence of the injured Reece James and Ben Chilwell, and he has led by example in the middle of the park, impressing with his technical and physical qualities in and out of possession.
Gallagher signed a five-year deal in 2020 so is fast approaching the final 18 months of his current Chelsea contract. Pochettino surmised on the chances of the 23-year-old extending his stay at Stamford Bridge beyond that.
‘First of all, you have to see how they feel, in this case the player and the club, the intentions of either side. It’s about feeling good together.
‘He’s a player who is doing fantastically. He’s an amazing player and we are so happy with how he is doing things.’
