Mauricio Pochettino met the media for the first time as Chelsea head coach and during his conference at Stamford Bridge, he lifted the lid on discussions he has had with the club's sporting directors.
Asked about his early conversations with the club's owners and co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, Pochettino discussed the developing relationship and trust between them.
‘When we met for first time and agreed I would start on 1 July, Laurence, Paul and the owners showed me the strategic plan and I agreed,’ Pochettino said.
‘The club started to work on the ideas and I think is doing a fantastic job. I'm happy, and it continues to work in this way with the plan that we agreed. Of course, from 1 July I am now more involved and I work more closely with Paul and Laurence to take the best decisions for the club.
‘The plan they presented to me when we were talking had many circumstances, different situations, personal situations, things to care about that I didn't know before because I was outside of the club.
‘That's why I trust in them and said, "you know better than me and from 1 July I will be more involved". I don't say that I need to take all the decisions but I think it is going to be easy to take together the decisions for Chelsea.’
Working cleverly together
‘It was a nice conversation from the beginning,’ Pochettino added. ‘They [the sporting directors] were very honest with me. They showed the plan, showed everything, the good, the not so good, and what needed to happen before 1 July and then after 1 July. I listened to them and then spoke with the owners in a really good way. They are clever people and in football it’s always about being clever and learning from past experiences.
‘I feel good. I am not a person or coach that needs to ask for power. I don’t need in my contract a clause that says I do this and this. The most important is that I need to show them, the players and the fans, that they can trust in my decision, that they can trust in the way we’re going to operate and take decisions. When we analyse and judge all the situations, they need to really believe and that is my job.’
Believing from day one
Talk then moved on from the plan to the ambitions. Our new head coach was clear about those.
‘My target is to win,’ he stated.
‘Of course, it is to do a good job and play well, as that is our style and philosophy. If you do not win at a club like Chelsea, for sure you are going to struggle.
‘It is so important to try to achieve difficult things, because in the Premier League is really tough, many teams want the same as us [trophies].
‘We need to bring players in that believe from day one that it is all about winning, being competitive and giving our best. We are already working really hard and then we need to translate this energy to our fans to create a togetherness.
'What I found from day one, the squad is not all the squad yet, but the players were very open and the attitude was opening. We are going to add more quality.
'I want to provide and give the people, who trust in me, everything that I can do. I know that I need to build a relationship with the fans. I am fully committed with Chelsea.
‘My aim is to win trophies.’
Getting to know players
One player at Chelsea who Pochettino will be working with is a fellow Argentine, Enzo Fernandez.
‘It’s a pleasure [to work with Enzo],' Pochettino said when asked about the midfielder. 'I feel very proud about him and the national team, all the players that gave the third World Cup to Argentina. I am excited and I hope that we can win many trophies together here.
There was also a question over who will be handed the club captaincy after the departure of Cesar Azpilicueta this week. Pochettino confirmed a decision is not on the short-term agenda as he requires more time to build relationships with his players.
‘To chose a captain, first of all we need to close the squad and then I need to get to know all the players to make a decision. I need to feel the players, feel their commitment, feel their character and personality.
‘It’s one thing from the outside, another when you are working with them. But we have many players with experience and we will decide.’
