Graham Potter, revealing some of Chelsea’s transfer strategy during January, has explained why among the targets, a centre-forward was not one of them.

The Blues strengthened the squad in defensive and midfield positions, and in attack, but not with a conventional central striker. And here’s the reason why…

‘We’ve tried to address the goalscoring problem in terms of helping the team attack better,’ our head coach detailed. ‘You can zoom into one position but teams in the past four or five years have won the Premier League without a recognised centre-forward, arguably.

‘It’s better for the team to attack better, to play better, to create more chances, to be more dangerous in attack. That’s the best way to solve the problem of not scoring enough goals.

‘What we have done this window is exciting,’ Potter added. ‘The players are exciting. You can see the direction we’re trying to go in: building for the future but with quality that can compete now.

‘I don’t think the spending will continue as it has. There was a regeneration that needed to happen, which the club has done. We have to say the next window and the window after will be different. That’s clear.’

Expanding on the aim of ensuring the long-term future is a bright blue, while at the same time improving today, Potter considered whether his side can climb the table quickly.

‘There’s the potential for that,’ he confirmed. ‘We are excited. At the same time, we have to respect the team needs to come together, gel and work.

‘We are excited with the players we have added, excited for the players returning from injury, and then you look at the group and it’s a really competitive and strong one.’
