Filipe Coelho's team made a strong start to our Premier League Cup campaign with an impressive performance, securing a dominant victory by putting six goals past Brentford, including a hat-trick from Tyrique George.
The Blues began the match with intensity and were the better side, but it was Brentford who opened the scoring through Ashley Hay. However, Brazilian Deivid Washington wasted no time in finding the equaliser with an impressive volley.
Before the break, Hay managed to secure a brace, but our Under-21s came out with the same aggression in the second half. Tyrique George stole the show with two successive goals, leaving the Brentford keeper helpless.
After a period of threatening play, Chelsea’s pressure on Brentford’s backline led to two own goals from the away side as they struggled to keep out our chances.
George sealed the victory, completing his hat-trick with a brilliant strike into the top corner, getting our Premier League Cup campaign off to a positive start.
A fierce start
Chelsea began this Premier League Cup fixture with an aggressive approach, taking the first shot at goal within the opening minute.
Somto Boniface charged up the pitch, maneuvering past Brentford defenders before firing a low strike. However, Brentford's Julian Eyestone made an early statement with a bold save.
Chelsea kept up the pressure, and another opportunity soon followed. Harvey Vale sprinted down the wing leaving his marker behind, and delivered a precise cutback to Jimmy-Jay Morgan, whose close-range shot narrowly missed the post.
The Blues looked increasingly comfortable on the ball as Alex Matos pushed forward, attempting to find Morgan in the area, but Brentford’s defence stood firm, blocking shots time and again.
Despite Chelsea’s early dominance, it was Brentford who took the lead on 10 minutes. Tony Yogane struck a shot that Chelsea's Max Merrick saved but the rebound fell to Hay, who slotted it into the net, giving Brentford the advantage.
A wanted response
Filipe Coelho’s side wasted no time in responding. Less than a minute after the opener, Washington equalised with an outstanding volley that flew into the top corner. Vale delivered a quick cross into the box, where an unmarked Deivid met it perfectly, leaving Eyestone no chance. It was a fine finish.
Chelsea nearly took the lead moments later when George showcased his skillful footwork to feed Matos, whose powerful low strike deflected just inches wide after a last-minute block by a Brentford defender.
Applying pressure
Chelsea continued to apply pressure, with George remaining a constant threat. He took a curling long-range effort that skimmed the crossbar, giving Brentford another close call.
Brentford countered swiftly, forcing Merrick into a brilliant save when Hay connected with a deadly header from Yogane’s whipped cross, but the Chelsea keeper was composed and comfortably made the save.
Boniface tested Eyestone again with a stinging shot that the keeper just managed to tip over the bar. Then Matos linked up well with George, unleashing a low shot that Eyestone delt with once more, keeping Brentford level.
As the break was approaching, Chelsea came agonisingly close to finding the back of the net. After forcing Brentford back, George delivered an accurate cutback to Morgan, who tapped it towards goal from close-range, but Eyestone made yet another critical save to deny Chelsea the advantage.
Frustration hits
Despite dominating much of the first half, frustration hit when Brentford’s Hay secured his second goal just before the interval. Ethan Brierley’s looping corner found Hay, who rose highest and powered a header past Merrick, sending Chelsea into half-time trailing despite our dominant performance.
Full force ahead
The Blues regained control after the break, coming out with motivation and instantly applying pressure. This paid off when George was added onto the scoresheet.
After his first attempt was pushed out, he equalised by squeezing the ball past the keeper and into the far post with a right-footed effort from six yards out, following another smart cross from Vale.
Shortly after, Chelsea took the lead. It was well deserved. Once again, the team stamped our authority, and another goal followed as George found the back of the net in real style.
He received a well-placed pass from Brodi Hughes, who picked him out on the far side. George controlled the ball and rifled a fierce volley straight past the Bees keeper.
By the hour mark, the Blues were on top, flourishing with confidence. Coelho’s half-time substitute, Ishe Samuels-Smith, made an impact as he delivered a powerful cross. In a failed attempt to block, Headman headed the ball past his own keeper, further adding to Chelsea’s advantage.
Bees sting back
It was inevitable that our visitors would fight back, and they did just that. Isaac Holland weaved his way into the area, and hammered a low strike that rebounded off the post and into the back of the net, just out of Merrick's reach.
Substitute Ampah came onto the pitch full of energy and made an instant impact, driving the ball down the wing before unleashing a powerful strike. Headman got a slight touch on it, but the ball still found its way into the bottom corner.
Our hat-trick hero
George remained a constant threat, using his speed to take on Holland. As he entered the box, he fired a squared ball from a tight angle, but it drifted just wide of the post, narrowly missing the target.
However, the 18-year-old didn’t have to wait long to complete his hat-trick. After receiving a pass from Vale, he smashed the ball into the top corner, leaving Eyestone with no chance to deny his moment of glory - leaving the Blues with back-to-back victories.
