Ahead of the start of the 2021/22 season, Christian Pulisic has explained why the Blues go into the new campaign as a tight group.

We are edging closer to the return of competitive action, starting with a trip to Belfast to face Villarreal in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday 11 August, before our Premier League campaign kicks off against Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge three days later.

As our first pre-season under head coach Thomas Tuchel comes to a close, after the German joined the club in January to inspire a turnaround in fortunes, Pulisic feels there is a real togetherness within the team, helped by the many young players at the club and the blend of youth and experience.

‘The bond in the squad is good,’ said the 22-year-old. ‘Obviously there’s a lot of young players who grew up playing together as well, and then just a really good mix with some experienced guys. We definitely have a good family here.’

Of course, that bond will only have been strengthened by the success the players enjoyed together under Tuchel last season, as we followed up securing a top-four finish in the Premier League by lifting the Champions League trophy for the second time in our history.

‘It was an amazing experience,’ added Pulisic. ‘To think we won the Champions League – I don’t think it’s really hit us yet. The whole experience of it was just incredible.

‘I think we really deserved it after such a crazy season, with such ups and downs, and I’m really proud that we were able to win it for the fans and for everyone.’

The American should be especially confident going into the new season as, just like Jorginho and Emerson with Italy at Euro 2020, he has lifted another trophy at international level since that night in Porto.

It was certainly another moment to savour for Pulisic, as he scored the decisive goal in extra time as the USA beat Mexico 3-2 in the inaugural final of the CONCACAF Nations League in Colorado.

‘I always enjoy going back and playing with the national team and it was at home in the States which was very nice and I ended up winning another trophy. It was exciting.

‘In the final against Mexico, we always have a big rivalry with them, so it was a very intense game and I was very happy to get the winner as well.’

As the 2021/22 domestic season begins, there are sure to be plenty more great moments from Pulisic in the months ahead.
