Reece James is excited to get back to his best ahead of the first season under Enzo Maresca’s leadership.
The Cobham graduate had a disappointing 2023/24 campaign in which he played just 10 Premier League games for his boyhood club.
He spoke of his desire to leave that in the past and instead look ahead to the upcoming campaign when he spoke to journalists at our pre-Wrexham press conference.
‘I am in a good place now. I have got a long pre-season ahead as well as I am serving a four-game ban from last season, but I’m in a good place and I am excited for the season,’ the skipper said.
Tomorrow’s contest against Wrexham in Santa Clara will be Chelsea fans’ first chance of catching a glimpse of what Enzo Maresca’s style of play may look like.
The new head coach was putting the players through their paces at Stanford Stadium shortly before James made the short journey to Levi's Stadium to speak to the media.
‘There is a lot of adjustments to make to the new system,’ the 24-year-old said. ‘Whenever a new manager comes in, there’s a lot to take on board, but we are excited and I can’t wait to get started.
‘The last 16 months have been frustrating, whether that be suspension or injury, but I’m really excited, I feel like I’m in a good place for this season and I cannot wait to get playing and find my rhythm again.’
When asked for his one goal for the upcoming season, Reece did not hesitate to answer.
‘My goal is to stay on the pitch!’
The conviction in his voice was an indication the full-back is determined to put in performances that he and every Chelsea fan knows he is capable of.
